Ingredients
- 1 pound dried split peas
- 8 cups water, divided
- 4 cups low-sodium chicken broth
- ½ pound cooked ham, cut into 1-inch cubes
- ½ red onion, minced
- 1 tablespoon brown sugar
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- ½ teaspoon ground black pepper
- salt to taste
Instructions
- Place split peas into a large container and cover with 6 cups cool water; soak 8 hours to overnight. Drain and rinse.
- Mix chicken broth and 2 cups water together in a large pot over high heat; add ham, red onion, split peas, brown sugar, garlic, black pepper, and salt. Bring broth mixture to a boil, reduce heat, and simmer until peas are softened, about 2 hours.

A very nice soup. I added a whole onion instead of half. Also added carrots and celery. I soaked the peas. Since I was in a hurry, I let the peas boil on high while I chopped the carrots and celery. As a result, the peas were soft and the soup was made in about an hour. It was very tasty, although a bit sweet for my taste. I might cut back on the brown sugar next time.
Delicious soup. No need to soak the peas – I cooked this on low in the slow cooker for 8 hours (and it could have been an hour or two shorter) and the peas were soft. This is a great way to use up ham after a holiday meal. My ham was not very salty, so I added salt. Served with a dollop of sour cream and a sprig of parsley in the middle of each bowl. Served with crusty, warm bread and fresh butter on New Year’s Day to guests. Almost gourmet!
I used chicken bullion and added another clove of garlic. (I did not add onions but that’s a personal preference) Tastes just like my mom used to make when I was a kid. VERY high compliment.
This was delicious! I pretty much followed the recipe as written with one exception – I happened to have a ham bone so I threw that into the pot. This was easy and very tasty. Something about the peas really compliments the smokiness of the pork. I simmered it uncovered so it would reduce. The texture was thick and hearty. The leftovers are even thicker so we may add some water back when we reheat it. We will make this again.
My husband loved this but I used a leftover ham bone, added 3 chopped carrots & 2 stalks of celery.
Love this recipe! I’ve made it quite a few times and the family even ask for it in summer now! I’ve even used smoked eisbein when my grocer did not have the ham I usually buy and it worked out fantastic!
I have made this recipe five times. The split peas are always hard even though I soak them overnight and cook the split pea soup on High For five hours. I follow the recipe closely. Not sure what I am doing wrong.

I added half a cup of chopped carrots. I ran out of water twice, even with the lid on the second time. It simmered like it says to so I don’t know why it was such an issue, and I did soak the peas. The flavor was pretty good, much easier than other recipes I’ve tried.
OMG!!!!! It was soooooo good! I gave a container to my husband’s buddy at work. He sent me a text telling me how awesome it was and said he’d buy it from me next time I made it! I said absolutely not. I have a pot cooking on the stove @ 5:00 a.m. for his lunch! Serving suggestion…..Serve it with a dollop of sour cream.
I didnt add the brown sugar because we never have it on hand. I put in 2 TBS of white sugar just to see if it would work. It did, but next time I think I’ll leave the sugar out all together. Peas are sweet enough as they are. But overall its a great recipe.

I expected typical split pea soup for as simple as this recipe is, but OMG it was perfection! I followed verbatim and added the left over ham bone. AMAZING!!!! This is a keeper!

I added some leftover brown rice to thicken it up. Even better the following day. Yum!
Second time making this recipe. Used my pressure cooker as one reviewer suggested. Also had some left over spiral sliced ham that I diced up and threw in. 9 min on 12psi and it was DYNOMITE!! Hands down the easiest pea soup to make.
We added some lentils, tablespoon of bacon grease, and started the broth with the ham bone. At the end we puréed it and added the ham. So delish!0
