Steve’s Bourbon Buffalo Wing Sauce

  4.8 – 99 reviews  • Wing Sauce Recipes

Are your chicken wings covered in the same old red pepper and butter “hot sauce”? For a change of pace, try this on your following batch. We always fry the wings because we enjoy them crispy. Although it hasn’t been tried yet, it may also work on baked wings. Following your preferred recipe, prepare the fried wings, drench them in this sauce, and top with sesame seeds shortly before serving. With this mixture, you should be able to coat roughly a dozen pieces of wing. Your wings will be sticky, but the wing enthusiasts I hang out with say the mess is well worth it.

Prep Time: 5 mins
Cook Time: 20 mins
Total Time: 25 mins
Servings: 3
Yield: 1 cup

Ingredients

  1. ¼ cup bourbon whiskey
  2. ¼ cup packed brown sugar
  3. ⅓ cup ketchup
  4. 1 tablespoon white vinegar
  5. 1 tablespoon hot sauce (such as Frank’s RedHot ®)
  6. ¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper
  7. ¼ teaspoon garlic powder
  8. 1 tablespoon honey
  9. 2 tablespoons butter

Instructions

  1. Stir the bourbon, brown sugar, ketchup, white vinegar, hot sauce, cayenne pepper, garlic powder, honey, and butter together in a saucepan over medium heat; cook, whisking occasionally, until the mixture begins to bubble. Reduce heat to low and cook at a gentle simmer, whisking occasionally, until the sauce thickens nearly to the consistency of maple syrup or molasses, about 15 minutes. Remove from heat and allow to cool.

Sounds delish!!! Can’t wait to make em. Ok, I made the sauce last night for air fried chicken wings. Fantastic, delicious, make these again, taste so good, licked the pan clean….only a few superlatives that my husband used. I encourage you to make these. I doubled the recipe to make sure the wings were thoroughly coated. Enough said, just make it. P.S. We ended up buying a cheaper brand of bourbon as he did not allow me to use his expensive bourbon!!!!

Absolutely Awesome!!!

This is hands down the best wing sauce recipe. I make it exactly as written. My husband requests it every time I cook crispy chicken wings. Sometimes I double the recipe just because we love it so much!

I was totally out of hot sauce, but I had some sriracha. Only needed about 1/2 tbsp for plenty of heat. Otherwise followed exactly. This will now be a staple. So easy, and absolutely delicious! Thanks.

Good but not one of our favorite wing sauces

I made this sauce with some small alterations. I added two tables spoons of hot sauce, I also doubled the garlic powder and cayenne and added 1/2 teaspoon of onion powder. This made a delicious and flavorful sauce with no strong bourbon taste but it was still delicious and evident. I will be using this recipe again. KUDOS

This wing sauce is great!! It is a wonderful change from the traditional hot wing sauce. Sweet with a touch of heat. This is now our go to sauce for wing night and we make it to dip chicken fingers in.

I love this wing sauce, been making it for a few years now. I also use vanilla extract in replace of the bourbon. I kinda add a few more things like fresh garlic and a little basil. I use this sauce for my chicken wing dip and whenever I make it people always want the recipe.

I’ve made these twice. Exactly as written as much as possible. Except the first time I used swerve brown sugar to decrease the carbs and second time with regular brown sugar. I didn’t have the cayenne pepper so I used smoked paprika. Same each time. THE ABSOLUTE BEST wing sauce ever. Tastes just like the ones from a restaurant down the street. I used Jim Beam. For those reviews who say the bourbon flavor is to strong, try cooking it longer. I don’t like straight bourbon and I I didn’t notice. Also not spicy…I don’t like spicy I like to taste the flavor. This is a keeper, I will double it next time and cook a whole bag of wings. Can’t wait to make for company.

Awesome sauce, the only thing I changed was siracha instead of hot sauce. It was what I had

WOW, this sauce is awesome! I made this because the others like hot sauces but I’m usually a sauce on the side kind of person. Not this time, I couldn’t get enough and will definitely be making it again and again. Not too hot and just enough sweet to cut the heat for me. I do like a little heat but usual wing sauce is a bit much for me to drench a wing in. I am already thinking of all the things I can put this sauce on and how in the future I may double the recipe to have a little more for dipping. Thank you for sharing.

Delish. Not too spicy, not too sweet.

I rate very few recipes, but this sauce was amazing. I was looking for a change from standard buffalo wings, and decided to give it a try. I bake my wings in a hot oven after tossing in flour, seasonings, and baking powder, and then toss with the sauce. I made the sauce exactly as specified (I try not to modify recipes the first time I make them!) although I did forget the sesame seeds. They were incredible. Thankfully I did not have as many guests as expected, because I couldn’t stop eating them… Next time I might try cutting the sugar just a bit, and adding a little more heat… but honestly they are great the way they are. Thanks Steve!

Best sauce hands down!
