Kids truly enjoy eating these, as I did when I was in school.

Ate these all the time as a kid.
I used puff pastry instead. Very easy. Great for the pickiest of eaters.
Made these for my family and wasn’t impressed. Following the recipe exactly the bread was overcrisp and the hotdogs weren’t heated all the way through. Doubtful that I’ll make these again.
This is how we made hot dogs when we had no hot dog buns! seriously?
Cooked hot dogs first. Then cut crust off bread and wrapped bread around hot dogs and pressed edges together with a fork.Grilled just like grilled cheese.Served with baked beans and pierogies.BANG….a meal!
I’ve eaten Weiner Winks since I was in elementary school in the 1960’s, I still remember the menu for weiner wink day, “wiener winks, buttered corn, tomato juice, apple crisp”. It’s a shame the schools don’t serve those good old lunches! I’ve been making these ever since! I seldom use butter, the bread toasts just fine without it (although the buttery taste is certainly numma!) I put the hot dog diagonally then prop them against each other in a cake pan with sides so I don’t use toothpicks either! I’ve read reviews where people say to use biscuit dough, but those are called “pigs in a blanket”. If you wanna make weiner winks, it’s gotta be bread and cheese!!!
These were ok. My bread never turned a nice toasty color but yet was crunchy. Not a huge fan but glad I tried them. Thanks for posting!
I love hot dogs, and found this recipe to be just okay. What I didn’t enjoy is the bread tasted like you were eating a hot dog on a piece of toast. They are quick and easy to put together, but I probably won’t be trying these again.
We enjoyed these for a quick Saturday lunch. So simple but until you see the recipe, who’d of thunk? LOL.. I’ll do this again when I want something easy and tasty.
Kids liked these for dinner. A nice shake up of a grilled cheese and a hot dog.
quick and easy, great for watching the game and cheap to make for a crowd.
I have a co-worker who makes these with her students and recommended them. Her husband ate them as a kid. This isn’t a gourmet meal, but it’s kid friendly and extremely simple to make. I didn’t use the butter and they turned out just fine. On nights when I’m pressed for time or I’m not sure what I should make for my family, I sometimes turn to this recipe. It would be great to put leftover chili in a baking dish along with this so that you could have chili dogs. This also helps to stretch your food budget because it’s very inexpensive to make this recipe.
We had three little girls over on saturday, and needed a quick lunch idea. These worked great, except the bread kept breaking!
These are just not our favorites… Made them this morning as it was a simple and easy recipe. But definitely not making these again. Sorry 🙁
So simple, the whole family loved them.
Super easy and quick, and a hit with the kiddos! I had an issue with the bread tearing when I used butter so the second time around I just sprayed the bread with some butter flavored pam and they came out nearly perfectly. My 2 year old son loves hotdogs and grilled cheese so this was a great way to combine his two favorite things! I think next time I just might make them on the stove to save some time.
my mom did it when a was young but she added tomato sauce over bread (before the chesse) and some kepchup over the cheesse…
These are soooooo good! I used the Pilsbury biscuits instead and the family loves them! I made them for my sisters for the last super bowl part we had they were like little kids sneaking one before it was time. Now I make them about every other month. No one gets tired of eating them.
How cool are these!? I have unexpectedly been taken back to Sunnyside Elementary School on my favorite lunch day…weiner winks!!!! Yay!!!! I cannot wait to make these for my two boys…I tried once a long time ago but forgot to butter the bread. Couldn’t figure out how something so simple didn’t turn out the way I remembered them! I think the butter is the key! THANK YOU so much for posting this…I never forgot about those good ‘ol winks. Now if I could only figure out how they made their pizza burgers, and those pioneer bars! (peanut butter bar w/choc. frosting) If anyone out there knows the school lunch recipie for either of those, please share! 🙂
I make these with angus franks. Very good and just like what we had in school as a kid. Same name, too! Sometimes use different cheeses.
Tried these tonight, exactly as recipe is listed, and they came out quite good! Nice and golden brown-crispy! The kids liked them as did my wife (she thought they were better than the croissant dogs she sometimes makes). These were fast, easy, and good. What more do we need some nights? Thanks for sharing.
