Over the past few years, I’ve had the good fortune to trade some delectable and traditional recipes with locals while teaching English across Asia. This banh mi sandwich from Vietnam is fantastic and a welcome change from traditional sandwiches. Although Korean chili paste or Indonesian sambal can be substituted, garlic chili sauce is frequently found in Asian grocery store aisles. The beverage of choice for this traditional Vietnamese recipe with French influences is red wine or beer.

Ingredients

  1. 4 boneless pork loin chops, cut 1/4 inch thick
  2. 4 (7 inch) French bread baguettes, split lengthwise
  3. 4 teaspoons mayonnaise, or to taste
  4. 1 ounce chile sauce with garlic
  5. ¼ cup fresh lime juice
  6. 1 small red onion, sliced into rings
  7. 1 medium cucumber, peeled and sliced lengthwise
  8. 2 tablespoons chopped fresh cilantro
  9. salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven’s broiler. Place the pork chops on a broiling pan and set under the broiler. Cook for about 5 minutes, turning once, or until browned on each side.
  2. Open the French rolls and spread mayonnaise on the insides. Place one of the cooked pork chops into each roll. Spread chile sauce directly on the meat. Sprinkle with a little lime juice and top with slices of onion, cucumber, cilantro, salt and pepper. Finish with another quick drizzle of lime juice.

Made the parts of this a few days in advance. Grilled pork with a standard grill seasoning (McCormick) and sliced thinly. Mixed mayo and garlic to create an aioli. Used gochujang for the hot sauce Pickled shaved carrots and thin sliced onions with 3/4 cup water, 3/4 cup apple cider vinegar, 1/2 t sea salt, 1 T sugar. Heated in microwave for 3 minutes. Will slice cukes and prepare cilantro when making the sammies, plus hollow out some of the bread to hold the ingredients better and sprinkle lime juice as directed. Refrigerated until needed

These are delicious! *I’ve made this twice now. This is what I did the second time…I mixed all of the seasonings the lime juice, and added a little fish sauce, a little light soy sauce and a touch of hoisin sauce in with the mayo and slathered this on the bun. I also pickled my red onions in some rice wine vinegar. Next time, I’m going to use thinly sliced strips of pork and make it as above.

Great recipe. I subbed zucchini for the cucumbers because it’s what I had and also topped it off with spicy mayo and siracha. A great recipe! In addition, I added carrots because that’s what I’m used to eating in typical Banh Mi sandwiches. For the sauce, I also tossed it with honey + siracha and the lemon juice.

OK. This is how I did it. Used a French baguette, cut off the ends and sliced it in half. On one half, I hollowed it out, and spread liverwurst on it. Then I put a long sliced cucumber on it, topped with thinly sliced pork roast, pickled shredded carrots, cilantro, and thinly sliced jalapeño peppers. I chose not to use the chili paste with garlic, but if you like it a little hotter, go ahead and use it. This is close to how the banh mi shop in my neighborhood makes ’em.

I do not know if this recipe would be 5 stars without what I did however it has all the potential. Added ingredients: Jalapeno, Carrot, and Soy Sauce I had thicker pork chops so I pound them out to about 1/4″ thick and then marinated them with olive oil, soy sauce (could use any thing you have, salt, pepper and garlic powder. I cut these into strips to fit into the hoagies we had, about 1 1/2″ x 3″ strips in my case. The pork came out tender and flavorful! I cut up cucumber, jalapeno, carrot, red onion, and cilantro and mixed with ~2 tablespoons of fresh lime juice and salt and pepper. This sat around while I got the rest going. I mixed the garlic chili with the mayo so we only had one sauce to deal with but this really didn’t change anything. We had the sauce on the table and added it to our liking because it was so good. Personally, I thought this was better than authentic Vietnamese sandwich stands I’ve been to which is sad, but we don’t love pate, which is usually throws me off when I will eat one.

This recipe was great! I did follow what many of the reviewers said and marinated the pork before broiling. I also added potted meat, which definitely added more depth to the sandwich. Marinating the carrots in vinegar and sugar was also a good addition and a some thinly sliced jalapenos really topped it all off. Will definitely make these again, very fast and easy!

Stove cooked the Pork. I cooked it in canola oil, onion, and sriracha. The Sriracha Sauce and the Cilantro really make the sandwich!!!

This is a VERY good sandwich! I had to add carrots that another reviewer suggested; it was add a teaspoon of sugar to a bowl with rice wine vinegar and let the carrots marinate while you prepare the sandwich. It came out bomb.com it was so good!

Loved this recipe and I don’t care if its authentic or not it was fabulous, although my wife (who is Thai) and I could only manage a 1/2 sandwich each so the other half is there for later. Did as others suggested and marinated the carrot and onion also mixed mayonnaise and sweet chili sauce and chili sauce with garlic together. Will definitely make again, just smaller.

I love these sandwiches! I was short on time when I made these so instead of the red onion and cilantro, I got a bad of cabbage and sliced carrots and a large cucumber. I had to broil my pork chops for longer than 10 minutes, about 20 minutes until there was no pink in the center. I then placed each pork chop on the bread, brushed the chili and garlic sauce over it and added the cabbage and carrot mixture and the cucumbers. Everyone loved it and this is one of my go to summer meals since I can make it quicky and is great on a hot day.

SUPERB!!! I absolutely loved this recipe. It was super-quick, easy, and delicious! I will be making this again in the very near future, for sure. My only change was omitting the chile sauce; we like spicy food, but the flavors were already so good without the sauce that we didn’t feel like we needed to add it. Thank you so much!!!

We were all skeptical of this sandwich by the name, but we were soooo wrong. Delicious!!!!! I did use pork roast sliced, hoagie rolls, and put the garlic and cilantro in the chili sauce before spreading on the meat.
