Ingredients
- 2 hamburger buns, split and cut into 3/4 inch strips*
- ½ small red onion, chopped
- 1 pound lean ground beef
- 1 cup ketchup
- ½ cup finely chopped dill pickle
- 1 tablespoon prepared yellow mustard
- ½ small red onion, sliced
- 8 cups chopped lettuce
- 2 plum tomatoes, chopped
- 1 cup shredded Cheddar cheese
Instructions
- Preheat an oven to 425 degrees F (220 degrees C).
- Arrange the strips in a single layer on a baking sheet, and bake for 8 to 10 minutes, until the strips are lightly toasted. Set the strips aside.
- Place the ground beef into a skillet over medium heat, and brown the meat for about 10 to 12 minutes, breaking the beef apart as it cooks, until the meat is well browned and no longer pink inside. Stir the chopped onion, ketchup, dill pickle, and mustard into the beef mixture and mix well.
- Arrange the chopped lettuce on a large serving platter, and spoon the beef mixture over the lettuce. Top the salad with the sliced onion, plum tomatoes, and shredded cheese, and arrange the hamburger bun croutons around the platter.
- *For a more attractive salad, only use hamburger bun tops for the croutons.

YUM YUM!!
Turned out wonderfully and was quick and easy. I had a similar recipe back in the day so mixed the “dressing” (ketchup, mustard, dill relish in place of pickles) in at the end instead of into the hamburger. I used baby spinach instead of lettuce and added about a 1/4 c of A1 to the burger. Loved the bun croutons!
The combo of ketchup and mustard made the beef very flavorful. I also added hamburger seasoning as I cooked the beef. Another reviewer said that the combo of iceberg and the meat did feel like you were eating a cheese burger. The pickles added a nice touch. I will make this again.
My family and I loved it. This was so easy to make. I didn’t add the red onions, felt it was too many onions. I also used dill relish instead of dill pickles chopped. I added avocados. In the end I set it up like a taco bar and let everyone make their own plate. Great summer meal, especially if it’s raining. Will make again!
Fiedx for dinner this afternoon, Hubby is Type 2 diabetic. Switched out the ketchup for 1 pt. jar homemade thick tomato sauce with 1 TBS Monk Fruit sugar sub and 1 TBS regular ketchup. My first attempt to make semi-sugar free ketchup turned out excellent. Only used what was need in the recipe tho. Didn’t have buns, so de-crusted 4 slices of bread and toasted with cheap butter pan spray. cut the mayo in half, subbed it with plain yogurt. Then I cooked/prepared every thing according to directions. Don’t usually sub out when trying a new recipe but was needing to find him a good comfort food. Told hubby to eat all he wants it can’t ‘hurt’ you; (not a big cheese person so no problem there). He ate a dinner plate covered but not piled up, most food he’s had for over a week. He loved it; me too. It was just perfect. My girl friend who shared your recipe to me said get the buns next time, they are fabulous prepared as stated in your recipe. Well, my husbands blood sugar test after dinner was 102! So much better! I almost did the happy dance, LOL. Will keep this on the regular rotation of meals. Thank you so much for posting your recipe…:)
I didn’t care for this at all. Way too much ketchup for me. Tastes more like sloppy joes than a cheeseburger. Giving it two stars because my husband is on his second helping.
What a great salad! I wanted a cheeseburger but I didn’t want the greasy, too-full feeling afterward. This salad worked like a charm! I added mayonnaise to the meat because that’s how I like my burgers. The pickles made the difference between a hamburger helper taste and a real burger taste. Such a fun salad!
I added 2T of pickle juice to the meat mixture, and saved the chopped pickles for the lettuce mixture. I also added some of the cheese to the meat mixture while cooking. Before serving, I drizzled with Thousand Island dressing on the top along with the remaining cheese. I used Heinz Hamburger Dill Chips, as they most closely tasted like the traditional cheeseburgers I am used to.
I’ve made this recipe now for the second time. The first time made it pretty much as recipe states. My hubby loved it. I had a little too much mustard on mine, so the second time I put more of the stuff I liked and even sautéed some chopped onion and garlic, added mayo to mine and some relish, too. It was awesome. And both times I used grape tomatoes. I’d never thought of having a cheeseburger as a salad. This was Grrrreat!! No buns on hand, so made sourdough bread strips into garlic bread. Thanks, Kristina for the great idea. P.S. Good idea to even let each person build their own..
I’m almost embarrassed to admit how many times I have made this. It’s so good. I don’t use buns.
I used a couple teaspoons of bbq sauce and Dijon mustard. It tasted just like a cheeseburger!
very good salad!
I followed the recipe and I did not care for this. It tasted like sloppy jo salad, too sweet, too much ketchup.Great idea though.
This is a great recipe. I’ll make it over and over again. I used ground turkey and no bread
Awesome healthy substitute for a cheesburger craving, minus the bloated after-dinner feeling. Winner!
This was just ok. It’s been really hot here and was looking for something cool for dinner. I used ground turkey. It was good but I won’t make it again.
Great way to cut calories and still eat a cheese burger!
Hubby and I loved this! The only change I made was to only use 1/2 cup ketchup. It really does taste like a cheeseburger. Will be making this again and again!
A burger in a bowl. I use grilled patties for this and coarsely dice them, skipped the buns and ketchup, and added blue cheese dressing. Thousand Island dressing would be a classic also. It’s a salad. Have fun with it.
This recipe was delicious! Added some extra dill pickles for garnish and ranch dressing on the side.
I did not taste like a cheeseburger it tasted more like sloppy joe meat on salad. However it tasted delicious.
