Ingredients
- 1 pound dried great Northern beans, soaked overnight
- ½ pound cooked ham, chopped
- ½ cup brown sugar
- 1 tablespoon onion powder
- 1 tablespoon dried parsley
- ½ teaspoon garlic salt
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- ¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper
- 8 cups water, or as needed
Instructions
- Combine beans, ham, brown sugar, onion powder, parsley, garlic salt, black pepper, and cayenne pepper in a slow cooker. Pour enough water into the slow cooker to cover the mixture by about 2 inches. Cover and cook on Low, stirring occasionally, for 12 hours.

Absolutely fantastic! Couldn’t get ham hocks (all they had were really pig knuckles. –little meat and lots of bones) So I used smoked Turkey Drumsticks!! Yum!! I used Chicken Broth rather than water. This is becoming a tradition!
Waiste of my time. By far the worst I have ever made. Brown sugar don’t go in ham and beans.
I thought the 1/2 cup of brown sugar would be a pleasant addition to the ham/bean combo in this dish, but I was mistaken because it was much too sweet. My wife and it fiddled with adding a little bit of apple cider vinegar in a bowlful. It helped a little. Then we tried adding a little bacon grease at a time in the bowl we sampled, but to little avail. For us, the recipe is a bust.

I’ve made a lot of good bean soups but this recipe is the very best! The brown sugar gave it a subtle great flavor with the cayenne. This is the only bean soup I’ll ever make again.
I agree with exechef865, this soup tastes terrible. I strained the liquid out after 6 hrs in the slow cooker, re-added the dry ingredients leaving out the brown sugar and cayenne. Also added a teaspoon of salt and put the crock pot on high to warm for one hour. Then reduced the heat back to slow. My boys are coming over for dinner tonight and have no idea how this is going to turn out.

Loved this recipe. I read previous comments and reduced the brown sugar by a 1/4th and went lighter on the cayenne. As suggested I used real onion. Turned out great and I used one carton of Swanson chicken broth instead of water. The beans do thicken up as it sets after cooking. Great with honeyed corn bread. Will make again!
I did add half of an onion sliced, 2 celery stocks and a can of chicken broth. Used the full amount of brown sugar. Hubby told me this is one of the best soup recipes I have made. I would agree this is the best bean soup I have made to date.

Do not forget to soak those beans! I reduced the brown sugar to 1/4 cup. Set slow cooker on HIGH for 5 hours and LOW for 2 hours. Perfect! The cayenne gives a little ‘sumthin to the taste. YUM!

Quick and easy with good flavor. Used 2 cans of beans for shortcut. Would add much less brown sugar next time. I like the sweet spicy mix but sugar was a tad too much. Still very edible tho! Will do again.
Very good indeed! My man wanted ham and beans rather than bean soup, and I hadn’t made it before or even eaten it, so I was pleased to find this recipe. I heeded all the advice to cut the brown sugar, then kept adding more till I suspect I put in about the amount in the recipe . I guess I like sweeter beans than most here! I also used broth rather than water and upped the amount of cayenne a little, but that’s just a personal preference thing. Thanks for a really tasty recipe!
I really love this recipe. It is not just simple, it has a great flavor. I omit the brown sugar because my hubbie is diabetic but I also didn’t think we needed the sweetness when I like main dishes more savory. I like to use ham shanks for the extra meat but if unavailable then I use ham hocks for flavor and cutup ham pieces for the meat. The little bit of nip from the cayenne pepper is just perfect and not overdone. When my Mom, who is a country bumpkin, says that they were the best ham and beans she has had, then that is something to say.
It was tasty, and had a nice bit of heat in the aftertaste, but it was sweeter than I was expecting. Next time I’ll use less sugar.
This has become our favorite bean recipe. The only thing I do different is if I have a ham bone I put that in. Thanks for sharing.
I grew up eating ham and beans. This recipe is very easy! I did make a few adjustments. I didn’t use the brown sugar. I also left out the cayenne and onion powder. I used 1/2 tsp salt and increased the garlic powder to a full tsp. I also used the ham bone from my leftover Thanksgiving ham and the cubed meat that was left on the bone.. all in all about a pound of ham or more. I also substituted pinto beans for great northern beans. I am very happy with the way this turned out and will definitely make this again when I have leftover ham!
