Ingredients
- 2 cups packed brown sugar
- 1 (8 pound) cured, bone-in picnic ham
Instructions
- Spread about 1 1/2 cups of brown sugar on the bottom of a slow cooker.

- Place ham on the brown sugar with the flat side facing down; you might have to trim it a little to make it fit.

- Use your hands to rub the remaining brown sugar onto the ham.

- Cover, and cook on Low for 8 hours.
- If you are using a spiral-cut ham, you’ll want to cut the cooking time by about half as a spiral-cut will dry out faster.
- You can add a 6-ounce can pineapple juice or crushed pineapple and a few pinches of ground cloves in Step 2, if desired.

Excellent. Used the slow cooker. It was a 6.4 lb (2.9 kg) cooked ham bone in. Cooked on low setting for 3.5 hours. Internal temp was 147 f. Perfect. Used a baster once or twice. Used 1 1/2 cup brown sugar and a cup of pineapple juice and 1 1/2 cups of chunk canned pineapple added to the cooker. This recipe is a gem. TIP: Always use a small amount of a liquid when using a slow cooker. Regards, Luc
Did you know… That if the ham doesn’t fit, if it’s too tall for the crock pot lid to go on, just use aluminum foil to cover and flip the ham halfway in 4 hours. Turns out perfect
I have made this three times now. The last two times were yesterday and today. With a 4 quart Crock Pot, the 12.5 pound ham that I’d been given (free bonus deal from my grocery store) was not going to fit. Even after removing the bone and dividing it approximately in two, each half just barely fit. But I wanted to get it all cooked, and freeze most of the unused portions. There is a lot left. Anyway, it worked very well. The first day I made it with just brown sugar and cooked it on low for 8 hours. There were some small pieces in there along with the main chunk, and they got a little overcooked, but were still fine, the main piece was just right. The second day I still used brown sugar but added pineapple juice and chunks. Cooked it for just 7 hours, and it turned out great. And I think the pineapple really does add something.
Like it said, I had to cut a shank ham down which was fine bc there was a bunch of fat. I ended up with chunks of ham and added them too. Crushed 1/2 of my pineapple chunks and put some whole chunks in it. Add the juice and a couple cloves. It was yummy. I will make a again. So easy! Love it
So easy and so good! This recipe also frees up oven space. I had to change one thing because of a mistake that I made. One that I will save you from making now. After I put the brown sugar into my slow cooker, I plunked the ham on top of it. The ham stuck out almost 4″ above the slow cooker. It never occurred to me to measure either the ham or the slow cooker. I was using a bone-in spiral sliced ham so I cut it from the bone then put the remaining brown sugar on top. It was perfect! And I still have the bone for soup. Takeaway- either make sure that your ham fits into your slow cooker or be prepared to cut it so that it does.
I had a 7.6 lb unsliced ham and cooked it on low for 8 hours. It seems to be pulled ham as it’s difficult to slice. Taste is good. I won’t make again.
This was a great, tender ham. I had a 4.5 lb ham, so only used about 1 cup of brown sugar and cooked on low for about 3 hours. I basted with the juices after about 1.5 hours. We also added about a cup of crushed pineapple which I sprinkled over the top of the ham.
My family likes a bit more zest.. I add a tablespoon of dry mustard powder and a teaspoon of smoked paprika to the brown sugar and put a layer of pineapple rings on the bottom of the crock, I have never had anything but moist meat with TONS of flavor.
I made this with the ham, 2 cups of brown sugar, and a small can of crushed pineapple in 100% juice. It looks amazing and smells even better. I cannot wait to taste it!

The video offers information that is not included in the recipe. Good idea to watch that first, to avoid ham issues that some had. Also, if your slow cooker runs hot like mine does, even on the low setting, you might want to add some liquid to it to keep it from burning or drying out.
I used a 9-pound smoked ham and cooked it in the crock-pot on Low for about 3 1/2 hours. It came out great!
So easy and it was delicious. I had a 9-10 pound Cooks butt ham and it took 5 1/2 hours in the slow cooker on low. I only used a cup of Splenda brown sugar (sprinkled some in the bottom of slow cooker and patted the rest on the ham). I put a can of sliced pineapple with juice on and around the ham. Ham was very tender. My whole family loved it.
Great Recipe. Ridiculously simple. I added Whole cloves (@18) and used my injector every 2.5 hrs to inject that juice and baste the outside. REALLY good!
I like to add a half cup of root beer because it caramelizes the brown sugar and adds a great taste.
Easy way to free up the oven at holidays or enjoy a ham in the summer. I put some pineapple rings on the ham the last 90 minutes.
I make this for Easter brunch and it is delicious! So easy to make and allows more time to prepare the rest of the meal. Just make sure the ham you use is not spiral cut.

The ham was tender, juicy and delicious. I did use a can of Dole Crushed Pineapple with the brown sugar in the bottom of the crockpot as well as using the brown sugar and pineapple juice poured over the ham to cook.
