really rich hot chocolate for the Polar Express. Yum!

Prep Time: 5 mins
Cook Time: 2 hrs
Additional Time: 5 mins
Total Time: 2 hrs 10 mins
Servings: 10
Yield: 10 cups

Ingredients

  1. 6 cups milk
  2. 2 cups milk chocolate chips
  3. 1 (14 ounce) can sweetened condensed milk
  4. 1 ½ cups heavy whipping cream
  5. 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Combine milk, chocolate chips, condensed milk, heavy cream, and vanilla in a slow cooker.
  2. Cook on Low, stirring occasionally, until heated through, about 2 hours. Let cool until safe to drink, about 5 minutes.
  3. You can add Baileys, Godiva liqueur, or mint to this, and it really sets off the flavor.
  4. This can be made on the stove at any temperature, just so long as it gets to that delicious warm stage.

I have been making this exact same delicious recipe for years. We leave it in the slow cooker on ‘keep warm’. After opening their Christmas gifts, the grandkids sit around zipping on this until the last drop is gone.

I used half the sweetened condensed milk and it was too sweet. Next time I might try using semi sweet chocolate instead of milk chocolate

I was amazed that it really tasted like the hot chocolate we were given on the Polar Express! So very yummy!

Super tasty! I cut all the ingredients by 3/4 so I could make a “single” serving. It would still please two people for sure! I was also impatient and put all the ingredients in my vitamix blender and put it on the heat setting. It was perfect! You could put it in any blender and blend on high for about two mins and then pop it in the microwave for about 1:15mins. If you do that, make sure you put it in an overly large mug because it will expand and you will have a huge mess in your microwave with a small mug. You will find a delightful froth on the top of you do the blend and microwave method. I’ve been doing that for years with regular cocoa powders and milk. (Note: milk substitutes such as almond milk will not froth at all.)
