On a cedar plank, delicious butter and herb basting sauce is used to grill halibut steaks.

Ingredients

  1. 1 untreated cedar plank
  2. ½ cup butter, melted
  3. 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  4. 2 teaspoons herbes de Provence
  5. 2 teaspoons dried dill weed
  6. 2 teaspoons dried tarragon
  7. 1 teaspoon paprika
  8. 3 cloves garlic, minced
  9. 4 halibut steaks
  10. ground black pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Place the cedar plank in water to soak, about 30 minutes.
  2. Preheat an outdoor grill for medium-high heat and lightly oil the grate.
  3. Stir butter, lemon juice, herbes de Provence, dill, tarragon, paprika, and garlic together in a small bowl.
  4. Place halibut steaks on the cedar plank. Season to taste with pepper; spoon half the butter mixture onto the halibut.
  5. Place the cedar plank into the grill; cook, with grill lid closed, for 20 minutes. Open grill; baste halibut with remaining butter mixture. Continue grilling until fish flakes easily with a fork, about 10 minutes.

Excellent recipe. I followed the Traeger cedar plank salmon process & preheated my soaked planks at 350 for 20-25 min before loading the halibut. I bought a 2+ lb filet from Costco, cut it into 6 smaller pieces, seasoned the plank sides lightly with Traeger Fin & Feather seasoning, loaded the filets on the planks, then basted the top sides generously. I repeated the baste at 15 min. Google said to shoot for 130-135 degrees. The smaller/thinner pieces hit that in 25 min, & the thicker pieces in about 30. Simply outstanding. We’ll repeat this recipe soon.

Delicious! Burned planks on both sides before fish was placed on them. Soaked fish with mixture 20 minutes before it went on grill. So yummy

Excellent. Absolutely delicious. One thing I did was charred the side of the plank I placed the fish on. I’m going to try it on an Alder plank instead of a Cedar one next time. Definitely have to soak the plank more than 30 minutes, more like half a day.

I made some minor changes to the marinade/sauce. We did not have Herbs de Provence, and some mebers of the family are dairy free, so I substituted 1) a similar type of herb mix and 2) olive oil for the butter. I did everything else exactly as suggested. The family loved it. They said it looked and tasted like something you would get in a good restaurant. We will definitely use this recipe again. Cedar Planks are the bomb.

This was amazing! Easy to do and fabulous! I substituted some of the herbs but i did use tarragon and dill. Wow Yum! Wish i would have soaked the plank longer as it caught fire, but maybe that added to the flavor. I usedsome if the butter mixture to flavor my sauteed squash and rainbow chard

The recipe is great as is! Even though it seems like a lot of herbs, it isn’t. I cut bad on the butter by 1/3 and added olive oil instead. It worked beautifully! I also added a little more lemon and hot paprika to make it a little spicy. It was truly perfect!

Great Halibut recipe, marinade was spot on. On cedar planking, preheat your soaked plank 5 mins on high till it smokes a bit and begins to crackle. Turn down heat to low and drop your fish on. Marinade did run off the plank and catch fire igniting the plank, a spray bottle is a must have.

Be sure to use cedar… I used hickory planks and soaked them for two hours. This did not fare well.

Wow! What a great recipe! The only thing I changed was, I used fresh tarragon instead of the dried because the dried was not available. It would be a great way to prepare fish for a large dinner.
