This recipe is a family favorite since it is rich and fudgy tasting while also being quite simple to prepare.

Total Time: 4 hrs 45 mins
Servings: 8
Yield: 1 9-inch pie

Ingredients

  1. 1 (9 inch) pie crust, baked
  2. 1 ¼ cups white sugar
  3. 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  4. 2 tablespoons cornstarch
  5. ¼ teaspoon salt
  6. 1 ½ cups milk
  7. 4 egg yolks
  8. 2 (1 ounce) squares unsweetened chocolate, chopped
  9. 1 tablespoon butter
  10. 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. In medium saucepan, combine sugar, flour, cornstarch and salt and whisk to combine. In a medium bowl, whisk milk and egg yolks until smooth. Gradually stir into sugar mixture. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until mixture thickens and comes to a full boil. Boil and stir for one minute.
  2. Remove from heat and stir in chocolate, butter, and vanilla. Stir until melted.
  3. Pour into pie shell. Place plastic wrap over filling to prevent skin from forming and chill for several hours. Top with meringue or whipped cream and chocolate curls if so desired.
  4. To top this pie with meringue, make the
  5. recipe. Spread the meringue over the still-warm chocolate filling. You can either chill the pie, keeping the meringue white, or you may bake in a 400 degrees F (200 degrees C) oven until the peaks of the meringue start to turn brown, about 5 minutes. Allow pie to cool completely; chill before serving.

Perfect amount of sweetness. Easy to make and very delicious

Used a premade deep dish crust from ALDI, and topped with whipped cream just before serving. It was a HUGE hit – I have to say it is incredibly rich (hence the “fudgy”), I couldn’t finish my piece as a dessert shortly after a meal, but now I know to wait much longer, 🙂

I thought this turned out really good!! It was creamy and light. I put ghram cracker crumbs on it.

Really lovely recipe. Easy and quick if you already have the pie crust made. The first time I used this recipe it was the base for a coconut cream pie. Then my mother asked for just the chocolate pie. Yum! I used heavy cream in place of milk as that was all I had. Also used dark chocolate. So good!

I posted my pie on the meringue II site also. I made the changes as suggested and I had enough filling for my pie. This will be one of my favorite pies to make! It looks so pretty. And my family loves it.

Updating my review. I forgot to add that I added 2 extra teaspoons of cornstarch. Also, an extra half cup of milk. Super delicious!

I have never made chocolate pie before, but it’s my Dad’s favorite and he requested it for Thanksgiving so I decided to give this recipe a try based on the reviews. It was perfect! Based on some of the other reviews I did add an extra 2 teaspoons of cornstarch and 1/2 cup of milk. Also be aware that the boil will not be a rolling boil like you get with pasta more like a sporadic popping. After the chocolate is boiling continue to boil for one minute. Do not over boil! Great recipe!

This was delicious. I added the extra half cup of milk and cornstarch as others suggested. Might decrease the sugar a little next time. I also heated the milk partially in the microwave (a little over a minute) to decrease cooking time, and used a double boiler so as not to overcook. Overall a winner!

Looking for a pie recipe, this one came up. It was outstanding! Minor changes due to what was on hand–a little evaporated milk left over, and a little whipping cream left over, then the rest was 2% milk. I did add the extra milk to make 2 cups of the combined products, and 2 t. corn starch. This filled my pie plate! We prefer meringue pies, so that is what I added. Hubby took a bite and said “WOW! That be chocolate!!!” It set up beautifully to cut in clean pieces. I will definitely save this recipe and use again. I tried to add a photo, but for some reason, it did not want to cooperate.

Followed as written, topped with whipped cream. Pie set beautifully- thick, creamy and rich. Remember to stir, stir, stir or the pudding will develop clumps.

Very Fudgy!

I doubled the salt and used 1/2 cup semisweet chocolate chips for the chocolate, but otherwise followed the recipe. We loved it, though my husband, who likes light milk chocolate, said it might be a little too chocolatey without the whipped topping on top.

I’ve made this pie many, many times over the last 5-6 years, and it has always been a gigantic hit! I’ve found that you can substitute cashew milk for cows milk pretty well, just make your cornstarch measurements slightly heaping instead of exact. My favorite way to garnish the pie is either with sweetened meringue or with full fat whipped topping sprinkled with mini chocolate chips.

This was a hit at our bible study group. I made it as is with real whipped cream and chocolate shavings on top. I will definitely make this again!

easy to put together. yummy flavor. I had been looking for a chocolate pie filling that was like the one my mother-in-law made, and this is it. will make this my go to chocolate pie filling.

Very easy to make. Nice fudge flavor. Very rich, can definitely be cut into smaller pieces. Would make again.

this pie would have tasted the same had I just bought instant pudding and dumped it into the pie shell. yuk!

This is definitely thick, rich, and sweet! I followed the directions and it came out beautiful. I made meringue II from AR and put it on the warm pie and refrigerated it for desert the next evening. Our dinner guests were licking their plates. Thank you, Nancy!

I asked my husband to rate the pie I made following the recipe. I did add 1 tsp more cornstarch and a 1/2 cup milk and it turned out fantastic.
