Slow Cooker Sausage with Sauce

I came up with the recipe for these kumara sweet potatoes while attempting to complete a food technology assignment. Regular potatoes work great with this as well. In New Zealand, where I’m from, sweet potatoes are called as kumara. Sour cream is optional.

Ingredients

  1. 8 (4 ounce) links fresh Italian sausage
  2. 1 (26 ounce) jar spaghetti sauce
  3. 1 green bell pepper, seeded and sliced into strips
  4. 1 onion, sliced
  5. 6 hoagie rolls, split lengthwise (Optional)

Instructions

  1. Gather all ingredients.

  3. Place Italian sausage links, spaghetti sauce, green pepper, and onion into a slow cooker; mix until well combined.

I made an account specifically to call out the person who literally SAYS that they use this recipe for an idea only, then explains how she makes her completely different recipe and THEN rates it 3 stars. I make this recipe exactly as written all the time and it’s lovely. I’ve learned you can go basically as long as you want on low and it doesn’t hurt the sausage. I would regularly have my crockpot on low for 10 hours with this recipe as that’s how long it would be before I got home from work. Love how simple and fast this recipe is!

I (gently) tossed two spicy Italian sausage links with about 3/4 cup jarred pasta sauce, half a sliced yellow onion, and generous sprinkles of Italian seasoning and garlic powder in my 1.5-quart oval slow cooker, then cooked them on Low for 6 hours or so. They made the tastiest sausage sandwiches we’ve ever had! I recommend Pamming the ceramic surface before adding the ingredients for effortless cleanup.

This recipe is brilliant! I place the Italian sausages with cut-up green peppers and onions in a large crockpot with a 67 oz. jar of spaghetti sauce and cook as directed ( I don’t bother browning first as the fat from the sausages doesn’t seem to be a problem). I then cut the sausages into bite-size pieces and mix with a 16 oz. package of cooked pasta. I don’t need to bother with meatballs and my spaghetti dinner is ready. Even my Italian husband likes it this way the best. I love how tender the sausages get, too. Thank you so much for sharing JELLYKO.

Tip: boil the sausage for about 15-20 min to get some of the fat out, otherwise it will be a bit greasy. Sometimes, I like to brown the sausages on my grill pan before putting into crock pot. You dont want to cook them, just brown them a little. I am extra, so I also like to add a splash of red wine and some sugar to cut down the acid.

Used 500mls rose sauce mixed with 500mls marinara sauce. Served over spaghetti. Soo tasty! Chopped pepper and onion and well as the sausages.

One simple word: wow. This dish is simple but does not lack in flavour. Cooked it on low for 3 hours and then turned up to medium for 2 and the last hour on high. Added one more onion and a little more pepper and it came out amazing!!!! Everyone loved it. Thanks for an easy and tasty recipe. Will definitely be adding this to the rotation

5 stars for both taste and ease! I used sweet sausage because my husband doesn’t like spicy. Added bit of sugar to sauce to cut down on acid. Next time I will cut the peppers and onions thinner but great, easy dinner!

For a healthier version use the all natural Chicken Italian sausage. It comes in both mild and hot. Hardly any grease and the flavor is that of Italian sausage. I use Publix Greenwise but the Al Fresco brand is also very good !! Bon appétit

Brown 1.5 lbs sausage in a saute pan and put on the side to cool a bit. Then put in two whole peppers sliced 1/2 of yellow onion and 1/2 of red onion in the saute pan with 2 tbsps of butter and 3 cloves of minced garlic and 1 1/2 tsp of italian seasoning. Soften a little and put in 1/4 c of red wine and bring to a boil a bit while vegetable soften just a little. While vegetables soften slice the sausage. Then put all items in slow cooker cover with spaghetti sauce & cook on low for 3 hours.

This is “ok” and something quick to throw together. I did as another reviewer suggested and boiled the sausage for 7 minutes prior to putting it in the crock pot to remove some of the grease. I liked that suggestion. I used an Italian sausage, can or bottled sauce is in the “ok” category for me and cannot replace home-made sauce for taste. But having said that, for a quick, throw together meal, it’s worth keeping. I would serve it to family–not company as it is still a 3 rating in my book.

Great recipe but too much sauce. Used only half the sauce and quantity was perfect, a lb. pack of 5 sausages, onions, poblano pepper and a tablespoon of cajun seasoning in a small 2 qt slow cooker.
