Awful if you’re wanting a true chili taste. This recipe however is better suited for a base for sloppy joes.
Best chili ever. I make it all the time. But now I have an instant pot and would like instructions on timing. I used a different chili recipe instructions and it called for 20 minutes cooking time. I think that is too long for this recipe. Any suggestions?
Loved it with some modification! 1. I doubled the recipe to freeze some (chili freezes quite well) but used a pound of hamburger and a pound of sausage. 2. I listened to other reviews and doubled the spices. 3. Subbed Worcestershire for the vinegar. 4. Made modifications to the tomatoes with what I had on hand. 1 can diced tomato with oregano, 1 can diced tomato with green pepper, 1 can petite diced tomatoes and a can of tomato sauce. All 14.5 oz cans. 5. Added a cup of water because I like mine kinda juicy and most will cook off. 6. Added 2 bay leaves since I doubled the recipe. 7. Added 2 tsp of crushed red pepper flakes. 8. Added some Tonys and cracked black pepper. Also if you’re prone to heartburn like me adding just a small amount of baking soda (I used 2 tsp for this amount) will help kill some of the acidity without compromising the flavor. Sounds weird but works. I do it for all tomato based stuff.
Excellent!
I like to add one can of dice tomatoes and one can of crushed.
I tweaked this a bit by adding 8 oz. of tomato sauce and a bottle of beer, and omitted the vinegar. Then I simmered it uncovered until I got the desired consistency, about 90 min. or so. It’s delicious the first night, but even better the next day!
No substitutions. I don’t like it! The vinegar is over powering! I wish i know how to fix it!
Use anything except for the red wine vinegar, or vinegar for that matter….a few bites in and that’s all you taste.
Delicious! I have always been a McCormick mix girl, mostly because I am not a big chili eater. This recipe is super easy with ingredients you would normally have on hand. I did add a beef cube and a splash of water. Will definitely just be using this recipe again.
I would omit the red wine vinegar. It was too overpowering. I had to add more spices to Calm down the vinegar flavor. It was good on chilli dogs with white onions and cheese.

I use this as a starting point to chili. After reading the reviews, I double the spices. I used what I had at home. 1 lb of ground turkey, a small can of diced tomatoes, two small tomatoes dice by hand, two small onions some , I did add some steak sauce and I left out the hot sauce and red wine vinegar. I did add a pinch of cayenne pepper for some heat. And that turned out delicious so I did make changes but the basics came from this recipe
This was so delicious.
I made this with ground turkey instead of beef, used fire-roasted canned tomatoes, sliced olives, cilantro, as well as salt and a bit of sugar to cut the acidity. Great chili.
I added half hot sauce and little bit less onions.
Delicious
I added 2 tablespoons of brown sugar and also did worchsterchire sauce instead of red wine vinegar. The whole family loved it!
I followed the recipe exactly as written and it was so inedible. It was way too tangy with the vinegar in it. I really had high hopes since it had 4 stars but after reading a lot of the ones who rated it high (of course, AFTER I made it!) , it looks like a ton of people DID NOT follow the recipe and made substitutions. The Vinegar is definitely an acquired taste I guess but everyone took one bite and spit it out. I feel kind of bad because I had high hopes and I don’t want to offed the submitter but this was not good at all.
The only changes I made was using 1/2 cup chopped roasted red and yellow peppers that I roasted myself and had in the freezer and 2 tspns powerdered Worcester (from World Spice Merchants) and 1 tsp chipotle chili powder (also from WSM). Very, very good!
I added green peppers and didn’t use the wine vinegar
Absolutely delicious! It has wonderful flavors; it’s spicy, and a little sweet. I can’t get enough of it! I’m contemplating making it just a tiny bit more spicy the next time, but it’s honestly extremely good as-is.
