Total Time: 30 mins
Servings: 5

Ingredients

  1. 3 cups oil for frying, or as needed
  2. 1 head cauliflower, broken into florets
  3. ¼ teaspoon salt
  4. 1 large egg, beaten
  5. 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  6. 1 cup all-purpose flour
  7. 1 cup milk

Instructions

  1. Heat oil in a deep-fryer or large saucepan to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C).
  2. Toss cauliflower florets with salt in a bowl.
  3. Whisk egg and vegetable oil together in a separate bowl. Whisk in flour and milk until batter is smooth.
  4. Working in batches, drop cauliflower florets into batter; stir to coat.
  5. Working in batches, gently lower battered cauliflower into preheated oil; fry until florets rise to the top and float, 2 to 4 minutes. Carefully turn pieces over and continue frying until golden brown, about 2 minutes more. Use a slotted spoon to transfer fried cauliflower to a paper towel-lined plate.
  6. For darker, crunchier cauliflower, fry for a longer period of time.

My 15 year old son wanted to make fried cauliflower and we liked that this recipe used a batter not bread crumbs. As per the reviews, we seasoned the raw cauliflower with salt pepper and garlic powder. He made the batter as directed but we added 11/2 TBS sugar to the batter (a Pennsylvania Dutch trick.) He fried it perfectly (first time frying for both of us) and used ground salt on the pieces when removed from oil. It was delicious! Thanks for the recipe!

I modified the receipe after reading other reviews here that its a bit bland. I added in pepper and parmesan cheese to the cauliflower; salt and baking powder to the batter. Turned out well and my kid loves it!

I enjoyed this dish, and I followed the directions. But the batter didn’t coat it like the image. I will definitely try this recipe again because it was delicious regardless!

Got something very similar to this at a local fair, decided to try and make it myself, and loved it. I just found that if you planned on making more than 7-8 you would have to use 2 eggs Andi 2 tablespoons of oil to batter them all. Also, salt is better put on afterwards. Other than that, loved it, and it wasn’t hard to make.

My mother used to make fried cauliflower for us. However, she used bread crumbs. I use seasoned bread crumbs, omit the flour and add a homemade seasoned salt to the egg/milk mix without extra oil. If you need to avoid salt, then use a no-salt mix instead and that should spice up the taste.

Just tried this recipe and it was very bland, not any flavor at all.
