Kalbi Ribs

My aunt brought this delicious marinade to the family from Hawaii. It tastes like teriyaki. The meat is marinated before being grilled over a gas flame.

Total Time: 8 hrs 21 mins

Yield: 6 servings

Ingredients

  1. ¾ cup water
  2. ¾ cup white sugar
  3. ¾ cup soy sauce
  4. 1 tablespoon sesame oil
  5. 1 clove garlic, minced
  6. 2 pinches ground ginger
  7. 2 pounds beef short ribs, or more to taste

Instructions

  1. Whisk water, sugar, soy sauce, sesame oil, garlic, and ginger together in a large glass or ceramic bowl. Add beef short ribs and toss to evenly coat. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and marinate in the refrigerator, 8 hours to overnight.
  2. Preheat an outdoor grill for medium-high heat and lightly oil the grate. Remove short ribs from the marinade and discard marinade.
  3. Cook short ribs on the grill until evenly browned, 3 to 4 minutes per side. An instant-read thermometer inserted into the center should read 145 degrees F (63 degrees C).
  4. Use country-style pork ribs in place of the beef short ribs, if desired.

Used the recipe for beef ribs – the Flintstone specials. Cooked on the Bbq and reduced the leftover marinade on the stovetop. Fantastic. Best ever!

I cooked my ribs in the smoker instead of the grill so my review is based strictly on the marinade and not the cooking method. These were awesome! The flavor is just awesome! The only thing I would have liked to taste more of is the sesame oil. It is there but I would have just liked more of it. I’m a huge fan of that taste though so I think as written would be best for most people. I did use beef ribs but am now anxious to try this recipe with pork ribs. Thanks for sharing!
