On all the major barbeque occasions, such as the Fourth of July, we would prepare this. It tastes delicious!

Yield: 12 servings

Ingredients

  1. ¾ pound butter
  2. 1 large onion, minced
  3. 2 tablespoons poppy seeds, or to taste
  4. 1 (1 pound) loaf sourdough French bread
  5. 1 pound white American cheese, sliced

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
  2. Melt butter in a small saucepan over medium-low heat; cook and stir onion in the melted butter until translucent, 5 to 10 minutes. Stir poppy seeds into onion mixture.
  3. Cut bread into slices, leaving them still attached on the bottom of the loaf. Put an American cheese slice into each slit; spoon poppy seed mixture into each slit. Wrap loaf with aluminum foil.
  4. Bake in the preheated oven until cheese is melted, about 30 minutes.

This was an unusual recipe. I found a few guests who liked it but, by and large, it was not popular with most. I think the amount of butter was excessive but that wouldn’t have changed the taste, just the fat content. I did look this over, more than once, and hesitated to make it because of the ingredients- but I did, and it was not a success.

Unfortunately it didn’t have much flavor and we didn’t care for the poppyseed mixture or use of American cheese.

This was good! I reduced the butter to 1/2 cup (1 stick), and thought that was more than enough. I also only needed 1/2 pound of the white American cheese. This was tasty and a great side to our steak salads. I would make this again! Thanks for sharing. 🙂
