Ingredients

  1. 1 cup low-sodium soy sauce
  2. 1 cup water
  3. ⅓ cup apple cider vinegar
  4. 1 cup brown sugar
  5. 1 dash dry mustard (Optional)
  6. 1 dash garlic powder (Optional)
  7. 1 dash ginger powder (Optional)

Instructions

  1. Heat a saucepan over medium heat. Add soy sauce, water, and vinegar; cook until heated through, 1 to 2 minutes. Stir in brown sugar, mustard, garlic powder, and ginger; cook until dissolved, about 2 minutes. Remove from heat; let stand until slightly thickened, 3 to 5 minutes.
  2. Another way to make this is to stir together soy sauce, brown sugar, water, vinegar or oil, and spices until sugar is dissolved. All of the sugar may not dissolve well but you can instantly add meat, vegetables, or tofu for at least 10 minutes before cooking it for optimal flavor.

Made ½ a batch to try it out This was very good and easy to make. I didn’t have any ginger powder so I used some minced ginger. Turned out great. I guess if you wanted it thicker you could boil it down a bit or use a cornstarch slurry.

I forgot the dry mustard, oops. I used rice wine vinegar instead of apple cider vinegar and I added a little onion powder. It was a tad salty so I will try to buy some low sodium soy sauce for the next time I make this. This time I added a bit of honey and really like the outcome.

Tasty but a little too salty even using the low sodum soy sauce. Recipe was very easy to make. Very generous-sized portion. I made this to top stir fried veggies with rice noodles. Would have liked the consistency slightly thicker. I will make this recipe again and will add a touch of cornstarch to thicken and will reduce the soy sauce from 1 cup to

I didn’t have the ingredients for true teriyaki, so I looked for something similar- and found this. This is an easy replacement teriyaki sauce using everyday ingredients. I didn’t even have enough sugar so I made it with half white sugar and half honey. I also didn’t have mustard, but doubled the garlic and ginger. I simmered it for 45 minutes to reduce and thicken. It’s tangy and sweet. It’s not true teriyaki but it is a great substitute.

Easy to make but the soy sauce was overpowering. Ingredient amounts need to be adjusted. Mine tasted better after adding more Brown sugar. Sauce never thickened.
