For the Easter holiday, very festive! I’ve also used milk chocolate icing or tinted vanilla icing to match the handle to adorn the basket instead of candy, and then I used a fork to gently rake a basket-like woven look into the sides of the cake.

Ingredients
- 1 cup chopped onion
- 1 teaspoon vegetable oil
- 1 pound dried split peas
- 1 pound ham bone
- 1 pinch salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
- In a medium pot, saute onions in oil. Add the split peas, ham bone, and enough water to cover ingredients; season with salt and pepper.
- Cover, and cook until there are no peas left, just a green liquid, 2 hours. While it is cooking, check to see if water has evaporated. You may need to add more water as the soup continues to cook.
- Once the soup is a green liquid remove from heat, and let stand so it will thicken. Once thickened you may need to heat through to serve.

Use this recipe all the time but also add carrots!
Very good but I added a little garlic, celery and carrots all minced. Husband loved it and wished I made more to freeze for later.
Wow, this was great. I used the crockpot, no oil, qt and a half vegetable broth, 3 small celery stalks and 2 medium carrots sliced very thinly, medium diced onion, 1 lb split peas and no seasonings. The Easter ham bone was flavorful enough to let the beautiful flavors of the vegetables shine through.

This soup was absolutely delicious. The recipe was kept simple, nothing extra needed.
So good!
I rate this recipe five stars for quick and easy preparation, flavor, nutrition, cost effectiveness, and eye appeal. I resisted the temptation to add a lot of ingredients as I was looking for a simple and pure pea soup. I added 2T Herbes de Provence, used a smoked ham shank, beef bone broth, and added no salt or pepper. Because I did not pre-soak the peas, I used an immersion blender at the end and still needed to strain the soup. I added a spoonful of the strained solids to each portion for texture and that worked for me. Next time I will pre-soak the peas and allow for more cooking time. Love it!
I love this dish. I love to have found a recipe where you don’t need to presoak the peas.
Didn’t have a ham bone so cubed left over ham and had a seasoning ham package in with the dried peas. ..it turned out fabulous!
Added carrots, celery and potatoes; wonderful soup!
Too salty for me. Next time will not add salt. The salt from the ham bone is sufficient.
fabulous…….. easy……….. and delicious
I added carrots and a couple bay leaves. I also used vegetable stock for part of the water. Yum! I did not add salt because the ham was plenty salty for the flavor.
Was easy to prepare and cook. I added a precooked ham and it was Yummy
Yes I topped up the recipe so good already with some vegetables added. TY Will make it again soon.
I added some carrots and celery. Served with a pretzel breadstick. Easy basic recipe.
I followed the recipe but added chicken stock. It was so easy and so delicious. The kids loved it!
My first time to make it and it was a hit! I had all the ingredients at home and love that it was a simple but tasty recipe.
It was nice and thick but I added alot more pepper than it called for cause I’m allergic to onions and it was a little bit bland so.
Definitely make it again
Yummy! Added 2 carrots & 3 stalks celery roughly chopped. Husband went back for seconds!
