Homemade Dog Food

Ground turkey, grains, and vegetables may be used to make homemade dog chow quickly and easily. I’ve been making my own dog food for 4 years, ever when my dogs were pups! It can also be included in their kibble. People adore it!

Prep Time: 5 mins
Cook Time: 25 mins
Total Time: 30 mins
Servings: 5
Yield: 10 cups

Ingredients

  1. 1 pound ground turkey
  2. 6 cups water
  3. 2 cups brown rice
  4. 1 teaspoon dried rosemary
  5. ½ (16 ounce) package frozen broccoli, carrots and cauliflower combination

Instructions

  1. Place ground turkey, water, rice, and rosemary into a large Dutch oven. Stir until ground turkey is broken up and evenly distributed throughout the mixture; bring to a boil over high heat, then reduce heat to low and simmer for 20 minutes.
  2. Add frozen vegetables, and cook for an additional 5 minutes. Remove from heat and cool. Refrigerate until using.
  3. My dogs are large breed so they get 2 cups in the a.m. and p.m.

The recipe is great gives a real good foundation. As well as some of the comments especially the ones that explain why they may add somethin… I wish people would quit freaking some of these people out and saying chocolate is so toxic for dogs chocolate can be toxic if they eat too much 1.5 Oz per 10 lb is fine.. I’ve seen some elderly people really about stroke out because they thought their dog was going to die but other than that everything is great

Love this and thank you.My pup usually picks throughout the day.He ate this all at once and it’s so much cheaper than buying most kibble and especially fresh dog food. Thank You

My two dogs approve! I followed the recipe except the rosemary i didn’t have on hand. I have a 2 and 3 year old Border Collies. Their dog food is getting mighty expensive so I started looking into making food to give them in addition to the expensive kibble. I was worried they wouldn’t like the veggies but to my surprise, they chowed down the whole bowl, veggies included! This is such a simple and quick recipe, too. Perfect for me who doesn’t like to spend a lot of time in the kitchen. It also made a decent amount so should last several meals. Super satisfied and happy that I found this recipe, thank you!!

My Dog likes it But think I’ll reduce the rice a bit. Some vets say 15% should be protein and some say as high as 50% think I’ll just go about 35/40%. So I’ll reduce rice to 1 cup. Guess it depends on how active your dog is.

My 14 year old boxer and 15 month Yorkie just love it. The boxer,Sam seams like he has more energy and plays more with Abby. I did make it once with ground turkey and ground chicken as a change. This week I’m freezing some in a Ziploc bag to see how it does.

K9’s in the wild are frequently found chowing down on broccoli, at least the vegetarian ones anyway. This will suit those breeds well.

Easy recipe, I have a 50lb pit mix who is very picky. I’ve been feeding her farmers dog for a couple of years but it’s getting too expensive so I decided to start making it myself. Much cheaper. However I add powdered vitamins to ensure she gets all the nutrients she needs.

Never, ever put garlic or onion of any type in dog food. Anything from the allium family is toxic as can be, as well as chocolate, grapes, raisins… Always do your homework when feeding your fur babies! It could save them from becoming deathly ill or worse! Peace ✌

The recipe doesn’t indicate whether the brown rice is raw or cooked. I assumed it is raw, and am making it at this moment. Hope it turns out ok!

This was great… my senior furbaby loved it. It made 18 – 1/2 cup portions. Enough for nine days. Costing out a little over $1.50 per day. I am going to experiment with adding and changing the meats with beef and liver for vitamin purposes, but this is a great base. Yes, I tasted it and it is totally edible.

Haven’t made this but I want too, can it be frozen so it lasts longer ? If so, how long can it be frozen ?

This recipe is amazing but I just want to stress something to everyone commenting on this recipe by adding in other ingredients: DO NOT ADD GARLIC, GARLIC POWDER, ONION POWDER, ONIONS, CHIVES, OR SHALLOTS!!! These ingredients are HIGHLY TOXIC to dogs as they have an enzyme within them that will attack their red blood cells. If in doubt about any ingredients, check with your vet or google it. Please do not feed your dogs any form of those ingredients ~ garlic powder is even a higher concentration of garlic. Thank you!

Thank you for sharing this! Just finished cooking it, I gave a bit to my frenchie as he seems to like it. I have doubled the ingredients, used bone broth instead of water and used minced beef. This is the result! Looks so tasty! I will add some bone broth when I will feed my dog as he doesn’t really drink water and I will give him some cod oil capsules, just to give it a bit more of nutrients!

My dogs love this recipe. I was spending over $160 a month on dog food because my pit bull has allergies and fed all 3 of my dogs the same food. Serving them the homemade food with things that I already have for myself is saving lots of money. They love it and are getting more nutrients on smaller servings. A must to budget the cost.

Great! I added a little garlic powder with the rosemary, I cut up some fresh carrots which I already had.

My extremely picky dog LOVES this. She is chowing down as I type. I put the veggies in a food processor because she takes vegetables out if they are in chunks. She ate it all!
