A nutritious, crunchy biscuit that tastes great alone, with butter and jelly, or with soup or stew.

Prep Time: 25 mins
Cook Time: 10 mins
Additional Time: 2 hrs 5 mins
Total Time: 2 hrs 40 mins
Servings: 36
Yield: 3 dozen

Ingredients

  1. 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  2. ¾ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  3. 1 ¼ teaspoons baking powder
  4. ⅛ teaspoon salt
  5. ¾ cup butter, softened
  6. 1 ¼ cups white sugar
  7. 1 egg

Instructions

  1. Sift together the flour, cocoa, baking powder and salt; set aside.
  2. In a medium bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until smooth. Beat in the egg. Gradually stir in the sifted ingredients to form a soft dough. Divide dough into 2 pieces, flatten and wrap in plastic wrap. Refrigerate for 2 hours.
  3. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C).
  4. On a lightly floured surface, roll the dough out to 1/8 inch in thickness. Cut into desired shapes with cookie cutters. Dough will be sticky so be sure to add more flour to the rolling surface as needed. Place cookies 1 1/2 inches apart onto cookie sheets.
  5. Bake for 8 to 10 minutes in the preheated oven. Allow cookies to cool on baking sheet for 5 minutes before removing to a wire rack to cool completely.

These cookies were great to make with kids, and easy to cut and bake! They’re a little bit too chocolatey to just eat just on their own, but just adding icing or even a bit of icing sugar made them wonderful.

I loved this recipe and must say they are the best rolled chocolate cookies I ever made. I used parchment paper and rolled to slightly more than 1/8” thick. They did not crumple or break and taste fabulous. Just for fun I made autumn leaves-. I also took some of this dough and mixed it with a rolled cookie recipe which I colored half orange and half yellow. But I must say that the pure chocolate ones were the tastiest. I used plain unsweetened Hershey cocoa. So good!

Hard to get perfect but amazing!

These taste just like chocolate wafers that you make ice cream sandwiches with. Delicious! I topped them with cream cheese mint fondant which compliments the deep chocolate flavor of the cookie. Crisp edges and soft centers. My new only chocolate cookie recipe.

These cookies were very good! I took the advice of the lady who added vanilla and cinnamon to the recipe and that made for a little spice and nice flavor. Our family celebrated the feast of the Three Kings on January 6th and I cut out the cookies in the shape of a star for the Star of Bethlehem. I sprinkled them with powdered sugar and they were very good!

These came out great! We like the flavor and that the cookies are thin and crunchy! My first time using cocoa powder to make cookies, but probably not my last!

Very good! I made this recipe exactly as written and it turned out great! I made heart cutout cookies for Valentines Day. Melted white chocolate chips and drizzled over cooled cookies. Husband was impressed…

The dough tasted delicious but crumbled like crazy! Added more margarine but that didn’t make a difference. Couldn’t roll them out at all. I pressed into a pan and baked for 10 mins. Tastes like brownie but super crumbly. Very disappointed

When you’re tired of white sugar cookies, these are the perfect alternative. Very chocolatey flavor.

Loved the chocolate flavor but had a problem with some of my cutouts, the tail and feet easily broke on my halloween cat cutout! Any suggestions to correct the problem would be appreciated! Definitely will be making these again.

I made stain glass cookies by using a 4” cutter for the outside and and a 2” cutter for the inside. I found it was easier to keep the shape of the cookie by placing the cookie once cut with the the larger size on a parchment lined cookie sheet then carefully lineup the smaller cutter and remove the center of the cookie. Chill cookies on cookie sheet for 10-15 min. Fill center of cookie with pulverized hard candy.

These cookies were the worst texture. They were extremely crumbly and couldn’t be rolled at all. I tried cooking them as scooped cookies, since they wouldn’t roll out. They didn’t spread at all and were a weird texture. I don’t recommend these cookies at all.

Exactly what I was hoping for. The cookies kept their shape well.

Really nice crisp chocolate cookie! Adding it to my favourite recipes. (Did add a little vanilla and an extra egg yolk)

Not too sweet, sturdy for decorating. I didn’t mind rolling with flour…..not much needed so little residue

If you don’t like the taste of this cookie, you’re crazy. I gave this 5 stars based on what others suggested and I followed. I still thought it was too sticky so I added 1/8 c more flour which helped some. I had no problems using flour [lots of it] to roll and cut out shapes. It didn’t show on my cookies once baked I guess because the dough is so moist. I do not suggest this recipe for cookies you want to dip instead of piping icing. They’re way too soft. Hopefully the icing helps strengthen them a little better. And yes, they taste just like brownies. UPDATE: not sure about adding the extra flour now. Just realized I used 1 cup butter instead of 1/2 cup. Probably why I had slight issues. Oops!

Totes will make again!

These taste like a brownie in cookie form. They are excellent. No frosting ontop required. Only changes were from the other reviews of added another egg & 1tsp vanilla. The dough is a bit sticky but I always separate the dough into 2 pieces, put it loosely in Saran Wrap, press it to the req thickness and then put it in the fridge. No rolling req just use the cookie cutters when ready

I added half a teaspoon cinnamon and a teaspoon vanilla and cooked them a little thicker for 7 minutes as someone else has suggested — YUM! It’s like a brownie cookie. Great recipe!

Usually my reviews have a few tips on how to make the recipe better and 5e rest is positive but these didn’t work for me. I’ve tried these multiple times and every time I make them I regret it……sorry but I have to give this a one star.
