Waffled Falafel

A tasty variation on a traditional dish is waffled falafel. In a low oven, keep the cooked waffles warm. Serve them with hummus, parsley, tomatoes, and cucumbers.

Ingredients

  1. cooking spray
  2. 2 (15 ounce) cans garbanzo beans (chickpeas), drained and rinsed
  3. 1 medium onion, chopped
  4. 2 large egg whites
  5. ¼ cup chopped fresh cilantro
  6. ¼ cup chopped fresh parsley
  7. 3 cloves roasted garlic, or more to taste
  8. 1 ½ tablespoons all-purpose flour
  9. 2 teaspoons ground cumin
  10. 1 ¾ teaspoons salt
  11. 1 teaspoon ground coriander
  12. ¼ teaspoon ground black pepper
  13. ¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper
  14. 1 pinch ground cardamom

Instructions

  1. Preheat a waffle iron according to manufacturer’s instructions. Spray the inside of the waffle iron with cooking spray.
  2. Process garbanzo beans in a food processor until coarsely chopped. Add onion, egg whites, cilantro, parsley, garlic, flour, cumin, salt, coriander, black pepper, cayenne pepper, and cardamom to garbanzo beans. Pulse, scraping down the sides of the bowl occasionally, until falafel batter resembles a coarse meal. Pour batter into a bowl and stir with a fork.
  3. Spoon about 1/4 cup falafel batter onto each section of the preheated waffle iron. Cook until evenly browned, about 5 minutes. Repeat with remaining batter.

Worked great in the new waffle iron, tho I did pulse the batter pretty fine in the food processor. Served in pitas with tzatziki sauce and cucumber tomato salad. Scrumptious.

Easy and delicious! I agree with other reviewers on 2 things. 1 – I cut the salt in half and I think the recipe is still too salty 2 – these are difficult to get out of the waffle iron. What worked for me was making them a bit small and then I figured out how to lift them with a fork. These are great toasted the next day.

Turned out great! Two recommendations, first is put oil on the bottom plate of waffle maker, put the mix in, and the brush a coat of oil top of the mix itself rather than the top plate and it worked splendidly! I made a tahini lemon and salt mixture to drizzle and it was relish… by the way i put it in for about 6 min total.

Yay delicious and fun. Do not believe that you can course chop the beans in the food processor and then add the vegetables. Even the video is deceptive because you can see they removed the brand and added the veg to the bottom of the processor. I recommend rough chopping the beans, removing that before you add the veg and spices. Then combine everything. Otherwise you’ll get puréed beans and it will be very messy to progress. Next tip… use the spray in between each waffle otherwise it will stick and not give you the gorgeous results you want. Enjoy!

ZERO STARS! I NEVER rate recipes if they are great but this should have no stars. Made it exactly the way it states and it was bone dry and first batch pulled apart when the waffle iron opened. The second and third batches looked okay but again, was too brittle to be able to remove so it crumbled into mealy pile of yuck. We sprayed EVOO extremely well between batches. We are experienced in the kitchen as well so it isn’t us. This was an epic fail. Seriously- do not bother and find another fun twist on an original food.

Low fat falafel? Is this necessary? I recommend using whole eggs and turning the waffle iron to a higher setting to avoid the mess, but the best thing to do is deep fry falafel.

I mean it was okay but there really is a reason you fry falafel. Maybe if I were on a super restrictive diet and I really needed to cut down on fat I might do this. But until a doctor orders me, in my house, it’s worth the mess of pan frying.

I made no changes to this recipe but did cook it on an ancient waffle maker that may have not been as thick as today’s models . The taste was good but the texture was terribly dry.

I used less cilantro. Served with chopped cucumber, tomato, and cucumber-yogurt sauce. Next time I would add a blend of tahini and hummus.

I love this idea, especially since I got a waffle maker for Christmas. I used an immersion blender to combine everything. These are definitely delicate, so I had to be extra careful getting them out of the waffle maker. Most of the falafel I’ve had has been very dense, but these weren’t. They were a great addition to some oregano chicken and cucumber salad. My only complaint is they were a little bland. Next time I will double the spices, except for the salt.

I love the idea of using a waffle iron for falafel. Unfortunately, I did not have success with the waffle iron, as others have mentioned. The recipe itself was also not really to my taste, especially the salt. The texture was too dry and crumbly.

This recipe was a big hit with my wife. I really liked it too. I left out the parsley (not a fan) and added a couple tablespoons of olive oil, hoping to prevent sticking. It got better if we cooked it longer and made it a little crisper. Can out of waffle iron easily. Topped with homemade tzatziki, cucumber, onion, cilantro, grape tomatoes, and chicken.

I used less than 1/2 the amount of salt & then add zest of 1 lemon. Great recipe. Served with homemade Tzatziki.

This turned out very well. I puréed the batter until it was smooth and used less salt. To stretch the recipe to serve 8, I added extra garbanzos and spices, but still just used the 2 egg whites and kept the amount of olive oil the same. I made it a day ahead and then added water to the batter so it was easier to spread on the waffle iron, which I brushed oil onto just for the first waffle. They did not stick. We had them with homemade tsaziki and sliced cherry tomatoes. Putting them on a rack in a low oven while cooking kept them slightly crisp. I would make this again. Also, I used whole wheat flour but I don’t know if that made any difference.

I made this with my 9 year old daughter. We followed the directions and ended up with an extremely brittle and flakey falafel. The flavor was too bland for mexample but my daughter loved it. If I made it again I would play around with some more seasonings. We had fun making it though.

I followed the directions exactly and sprayed the heck out of my waffle iron with Pam, but the waffles were a crumbled, stuck-on mess. I ended up making patties and frying them in a skillet. The mixture itself tastes great, but making falafel in a waffle iron is a risky endeavor.
