A vegetable burger worth making combines mushrooms and lentils! The mushrooms indeed produce a flavor that is reminiscent of beef, but I prefer to amp it up by combining steak sauce and mayo to spread on the bread for even more “beefy” flavor.

I made this for a dinner party that we were invited to. I doubled the recipe and reduced the mayo. It was a hit, but even though I used only half the mayo, and added 1 Tbs. Worcestershire Sauce, the mayo was still too much. I would suggest leaving the mayo out altogether and just adding more sour cream. The next time I make this I will also add 2 Tbs. Worcestershire sauce and double the white pepper. I fell like a little added spice will go very well with the sweetness of the caramelized onions, and the sour cream.
Great just the way it is
Burned the onions the first round. Even with pretty much constant stirring, the chopped onion burned by 10 mins. Need to go with low heat, or slightly higher…
Loved this recipe. I also made some changes… Instead of equal parts sour cream and mayo, I used twice as much sour cream bc it was too overpowering with the mayo otherwise. Also I added a 12 tsp minced garlic to the onions in the skillet while I sauteed the onions which gave the dip extra flavor. The last thing I did was sprinkle just a touch of garlic salt to the mix among with 12 tsp ONION powder. That last part made a huge difference.
Hubby is picky when it comes to French onion dip but he loved this recipe.
So I had to base myself on this recipe and another one that was basically cream cheese and dry onion soup mix to make a bomb french onion dip. The changes I made were: I added two cups of onions, a clove of garlic, 8 ounces of cream cheese, 1/4 cup of mayo and left the cup of sour cream as it is, and just a dash of milk to make it a bit less thick. So when you caramelize the onions, make sure they are starting to brown before you throw the garlic, so this last won’t burn and ruin the flavor. The result was AMAZING and way better than this recipe. The consistency was fabulous, the smell was almost like the store bought stuff and the taste was awesome! I would recommend anyone trying this recipe to not add as much mayo because it kills the dip completely, so be careful.
This is my first attempt at abandoning the dry French onion soup mix. I do not think there is enough flavor with this recipe as described. I am sure the lack of sodium has something to do with it, however some cayenne and garlic would boost the seasoning blend. I will try something with a more complex seasoning base next time.
I made this using following mods: 1 cup sour cream 1 tablespoon onion powder 1/2 tsp kosher salt 1/4 tsp garlic powder approximately 2 tablespoons mayo Mix all above then cook below and add after cooled & refrigerate 1 hour or longer 1/2 onion diced, cooked with olive oil & 1/4 tsp kosher salt, stir to coat all, in microwave approximately 4 min
Made this for my ‘only French onion soup’ eating good friend who ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT! Saving for the next gathering of my chips and dip crowd of girl buddies! Good eatings!
Pretty easy to make! Tastes pretty good to me. I added a teaspoon of lemon juice so you can’t taste Mayo as much
this recipe is delicious. I wanted to make a dip instead of buying one ready-made for a recipe. This made so much that I actually had a lot left over and I love French onion dip. This is wonderful. By the way, I used truffle salt and it was excellent.
VERY GOOD DIP
So good, I’ll never buy french onion dip from the store again.
We really liked this dip. It was easy to make and it didn’t take very long to make.
This was awesome I just made a few changes added 2 1/2 cups sour cream no mayo and 2 cups onion before cooked amazing!
I doubled the onions, cooked them for an hour and halved the mayo in favor of greek yogurt but used japanese kewpie mayo…best dip ever…the onions need a long time to cook low and slow though
I loved the onions . I was eating them out of the pot they tasted so good. The dip was ok I added extra sour cream and extra seasoning to help it out. I will try to make it again. Hopefully my family will like it better.
This recipe is perfect as is!
A little time consuming, but worth it. Very bold flavor. I made a double batch for consecutive outdoor parties. There was nothing left to bring home, so I had to make some for myself. It’s better the second day. All the flavors come together well.
turned out great
I made this recipe but switched out the sour cream for greek yogurt. It was delicious. I would totally make it again.
