Authentic Mexican Hot Chocolate

  5.0 – 2 reviews  • Mexican

In Taiwan, this dish is regularly used. A tortilla is fried with bacon and an egg, and hot sauce is added to the dish. If you’re a typical finicky eater, you probably won’t like it. Ham or bacon are both acceptable.

Ingredients

  1. 1 cup whole milk
  2. ½ Mexican hot chocolate drink tablet (such as Nestle Abuelita)
  3. 1 dried red chile de arbol, lightly toasted

Instructions

  1. Place milk and chocolate in a small saucepan over medium-low heat and simmer, stirring, until chocolate is melted but not boiling, about 5 minutes.
  2. Pour chocolate mixture into a blender. Cover and hold lid down with a potholder; blend until foamy. Pour into a mug. Break the chile into 2 or 3 pieces, discarding seeds, and drop into the hot chocolate. Drink immediately.

Very good. I used an immersion blender rather than a regular blender. Frothed up nicely.

This is quite delicious. I don’t have access to Mexican chocolate, so I used 65g Sicilian cinnamon chocolate from Modica. It uses an Aztec recipe, so it’s almost exactly the same as Mexican chocolate. Thank you for the recipe.
