This recipe for muesli makes a filling and tasty breakfast food. Pick whichever dried fruit you like to use. If you want, you could also use almonds in place of the walnuts. It tastes great when served in bowls with milk and fresh fruit slices or berries.

Ingredients

  1. 4 ½ cups rolled oats
  2. 1 cup raisins
  3. ½ cup toasted wheat germ
  4. ½ cup wheat bran
  5. ½ cup oat bran
  6. ½ cup chopped walnuts
  7. ¼ cup packed brown sugar
  8. ¼ cup raw sunflower seeds

Instructions

  1. Combine oats, raisins, wheat germ, wheat bran, oat bran, walnuts, brown sugar, and sunflower seeds in a large bowl; mix well. Store muesli in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 months.

Turned out great. I kept the ratios consistent (first time) and substituted dried cranberries for raisins and added pumpkin seeds. I skipped the sugar and toasted the sunflower seeds (excellent choice) and will do so again.

I think this muesli is delicious, although I did make several changes. I couldn’t find wheat bran in the bulk section of my co-op so I added extra oat bran and quick oats to compensate. Then I BURNED my wheat germ while I was toasting it – WOOPSIE!!!!! – and didn’t want to return to the store to get more so just left it out this time. And finally, I used pecans (that I successfully toasted without burning) instead of walnuts. My next attempt I will try to find all of the ingredients and not burn the wheat germ!

Very good recipe, although I agree with several posters that it doesn’t need the sugar, so that helps with diet for the diabetic in my house. I’m a cranberry fanatic, so added dried cranberries and they fit in great. I’m really surprised at the one particularly snarky post on here about a -1 rating. Must be seeking attention or just plain rude.

I used golden raisins, about half the amount and about 3/4 cup of chopped dried cherries and dried berry mix. I also added 1/2t salt. It is absolutely delicious!

I’ve been making this for years, but I put all on a baking tray with the addition of a handful of sliced almonds with no brown sugar and toast it at 300 ’til it becomes golden and stirring it every 5 minutes for even toasting. It becomes more crunchy. I use it in my plain yoghurt with a little honey.

When I say “I made it” and give it 5 stars, it means I made mostly this and added my own flare (based on what I had in the pantry). I added a variety of dried fruits and nuts (papaya, apricots, raisins, ground hazelnuts, pumpkin seeds, and sunflower seeds). Really yummy! Maybe that is the best thing about this recipe — it is a base that you can spring from to make it your own.

I made my own muesli for several years, and have a few suggestions. Reduce or eliminate sugar, and mix up your dried fruits. Try adding a shake of cinnamon, nutmeg or similar. Add different rolled grains to the mix-try kamut, spelt, rye…it changes things up! And the nuts are key…almonds are my favourite. Try toasting your mix in a warm oven for about 10 minutes…extra special!

I used this recipe as a base. I substituted 1 cup wheat flakes, and 1 cup barley flakes instead of the wheat germ and “brans”…the texture was too powdery. I also added cut up dates, goji berries, craisins, & cut up raw almonds. I also omitted the brown sugar…not necessary. Delicious and nutritious.

Leave out the sugar–not needed. Load up the dried fruit! Easiest way to get there is to blitz the nuts and the dried apricots, dates, etc. in a food processor until it’s roughly pea-sized. Three minute effort for days of total bliss.
