A long-time favorite at a nearby family restaurant is a dish that is strikingly similar to this one. We couldn’t find a recipe anywhere, not even in Italian cookbooks, so my friend and I created one.

Ingredients
- 3 cups chopped tomatoes
- 1 cup onion, diced
- ½ cup chopped green bell pepper
- ¼ cup minced fresh cilantro
- 2 tablespoons fresh lime juice
- 4 teaspoons chopped fresh jalapeño pepper (including seeds)
- ½ teaspoon ground cumin
- ½ teaspoon kosher salt, or to taste
- ½ teaspoon ground black pepper
Instructions
- Stir tomatoes, onion, green bell pepper, cilantro, lime juice, jalapeño pepper, cumin, salt, and pepper together in a bowl until just combined.

This sounded like it would be good but it ended up watery and bland. I added a clove of minced garlic and doubled the amount of cumin and was still unimpressed. Checking online after making this and being disappointed, I should have de-seeded the tomatoes to avoid the watery outcome and cooked the tomatoes a little to bring out their flavor better. Also, the selection of tomatoes is important, and that this recipe didn’t specify what type of tomato to use left room for error. I also read elsewhere to skip the ground black pepper, that its base notes detract from the zing you usually get in salsa, so I’ll leave that out next time. I’ll definitely eat the salsa I made, it wasn’t terrible, but I’d be embarrassed to serve it at a party.
My go to recipe for fresh salsa using tomatoes from my garden. Always a favorite. Have to admit I take the seeds out of the jalapeno and use extra cumin. Yummy!
This is the best fresh salsa recipe I have ever tried!! Can barely finish making it when it is gobbled up.
I snuck in some fresh green onions and chives from the garden, decreasing the yellow onion amount proportionally. Plus garlic. Perfect!
EXCELLENT! Recommend reducing tomato liquid by removing seeds, then salting them, let stand for half hour to remove excess moisture, then resume recipe. Even better next day!

I used the last cherry tomato and jalapeno harvest from my garden. I think the flavor is just perfect – not too hot but it’s got a bite.
Didn’t have cumin and don’t like cilantro, so left those out. Add about tsp sugar and most of small habenaro pepper with some of the seeds. Used some sungold tomatoes. 1 garlic, chopped. Cut all with knife rather than vitamix to keep it chunky. Great flavor, but spicy hot, the way we like it.
So for anyone that is accustomed to store-bought jar salsa only, it’s good for you to know that the salsa will not taste like that. This is a fresh authentic type salsa similar to what you would eat in Mexico… Which is much different than what you will taste out of the jar from the store. This may taste a little underwhelming to some for that reason. That said, this was delicious and will become my go to salsa recipe. I love Mexican food! The green pepper was a surprise and I suspect really adds to the flavour. I chopped it super small as not everyone in my house is keen on green pepper, and I think this allowed for it to subtly shine. Only subs I made was some cayenne instead of jalepeno for a bit of heat as I didn’t have any jalepenos on hand. I put only a pinch. Thanks for the recipe!
This salsa was delicious.
Made this exactly as is with one addition… I added 2 cloves of garlic. I used a garlic press, so it wasn’t a lot of garlic. Also used the “Vidalia onion chopper” with smallest dice insert to chop all vegetables except Jalepeno. Got rave reviews from all guests.
Delicious! My picky family loved it. I used dried cilantro leaves and cayenne pepper as substitutes.
Followed recipe exactly except added a little more cilantro. Usually tweak recipes after trying, but this is right on as is. Heat can be adjusted for those who prefer a milder taste, and salt could be added for some. Very fresh tasting, and even with all the chopping, easy. Maybe next time I will do as others did and use food processer.
Absolutely WONDERFUL! I didn’t have any green peppers, so I went to the garden and picked a yellow pepper. Also, I only planted Roma tomatoes this year. I wanted to make a “test” batch first, before I do my canning. This is the recipe I’m going to use when I’m ready to can. Thank you!
My family really loved it. I’m not the spicey sort so I only put 1/2 the jalapenos. I also peeled my tomatoes first. The ones I planted this year had a tougher skin. A definite keeper for me. Thank you for sharing!
Very easy and much better than the store bought stuff. I had to get rid of sone of the bounty from the summer garden and this was the perfect way. I used 2 smaller jalapeños with seeds and 1 small cayenne (seeded) for the kick my kids like. Excellent.
