Loukoumades are fried honey puffs from Greece. They are cherished as a Hanukkah treat by Sephardic Jews and are popular around the Mediterranean, particularly in Greece.

Ingredients

  1. 1 tablespoon vegan margarine (such as Earth Balance®)
  2. 2 cups canned pinto beans, rinsed and drained
  3. 1 ½ tablespoons chopped onion
  4. ¼ cup sweet pickle relish
  5. 2 tablespoons dill pickle juice
  6. 2 tablespoons ketchup
  7. 1 tablespoon molasses
  8. 1 tablespoon tomato paste
  9. 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  10. ¼ teaspoon hot sauce (such as Tabasco®)
  11. 1 dash liquid smoke flavoring
  12. ¼ teaspoon garlic powder
  13. ¼ teaspoon salt-free seasoning blend
  14. ¼ teaspoon dry mustard

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C).
  2. Melt vegan margarine in a skillet over medium heat. Add onion. Cook and stir until translucent, about 5 minutes. Mix together with beans in a casserole dish.
  3. Stir relish, pickle juice, ketchup, molasses, tomato paste, brown sugar, hot sauce, liquid smoke, garlic powder, salt seasoning, and mustard together in a bowl. Add to the bean mixture and mix to coat.
  4. Bake in the preheated oven until sauce is thick and casserole is heated through, about 1 hour.
  5. Use any beans you prefer.

I cooked these beans in an oven-proof skillet, it was easy to make and to clean. Served it with sliced bread.

Simple and good. I really liked the added flavor of dill. I actually used half dill relish and half sweet relish out of personal preference and that was a nice mix. Overall good recipe and one I would make again.
