McDonald’s Tartar Sauce Copycat

  4.8 – 76 reviews  • Tartar Sauce

I spent months tinkering with this recipe since I adore McDonald’s tartar sauce and managed to create a really good replica.

Prep Time: 10 mins
Additional Time: 2 hrs
Total Time: 2 hrs 10 mins
Servings: 6

Ingredients

  1. ½ cup mayonnaise (such as Kraft®)
  2. 3 ½ tablespoons dill pickle relish, divided
  3. 2 tablespoons finely chopped onion, divided
  4. 1 ½ teaspoons capers
  5. ½ teaspoon dried parsley flakes
  6. ½ teaspoon white sugar

Instructions

  1. Combine mayonnaise, 2 tablespoons relish, 1 tablespoon chopped onion, capers, parsley, and sugar in a blender until smooth.
  2. Transfer sauce to a bowl; stir in remaining 1 1/2 tablespoons relish and 1 tablespoon chopped onion. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 2 hours before serving.
  3. If you have a problem blending this because it’s too thick, add a teaspoon of milk or cream.

Made it and I don’t think it tastes like McDonald’s and I made it exactly as is. It tastes similar but I definitely don’t get McDonald’s tarter sauce right off the bat. Disappointed but it’s still pretty good. Maybe after it being in the fridge a few hours it’ll taste better

Well I didn’t have capers so I made the fat free version and got some today after work . Mixed it in. I only have sweet green relish on hand so I used that and added 2 teaspoons of red wine vinegar. Didn’t feel like digging out a fresh onion so I used 1 large green onion and diced it in.

I did not add any sugar. I really don’t think it needs it and it tasted great without it!

No changes made, it was spot on!

I love McDonalds tartar sauce on my fries. There’s always too much on my fish sandwich so I scrape most of it off for my fries. It’s never enough . This is so good I will bring my own when I get my monthly filet o fish, so I have plenty for my fries.

I didn’t want to drag out the blender, so I grated the onion and just smashed the capers with a fork. I stirred all ingredients in a bowl. We loved the taste and texture.

Very good the way it is.

This really is a great recipe. I wish Captain D’s or Long John Silvers would use this recipe. I never eat there because their tartar sauce is horrible. Bad tartar sauce can ruin a meal.

I left out the capers and used 1/2 teaspoon white vinegar, and with that change this is almost spot on. like 95% the same. Great quick little recipe.

Tasty. Consistency was perfect. I left out the sugar. It seemed like the ideal recipe which I’ll continue to use. Thanks you!

This was very good. I used dried minced onion instead of fresh which really thickens it up, but you have to give the onions time to rehydrate so it’s best to make day ahead.

Just made this today. It tastes spot on to the McDonald’s tartar sauce. The Filet-o-Fish is one of the two sandwiches i frequently eat from McDonalds and im obsessed with their tartar sauce. Im so happy that i found this recipe. This recipe has almost all of the ingredients in the McDonalds Tartar Sauce. The only ingredient missing is “spices”. Not sure what spices McDonalds use (as they only indicates spices in the ingredient list) but I added some black pepper and a pinch of salt and it worked perfectly. This will be my go-to recipe moving forward!!!!

OMG I have bought so many expensive and not so expensive store bought tartar sauces only to throw them out. Who needs High fructose sugar? Seriously? This recipe will not disappoint! Yay ☺️

I’m not a fan of mayo or tartar sauce. I’ve never had the fish filet sandwich, but my husband loves it and tartar sauce. After trying the grocery store versions which we didn’t like, I tried this recipe and it’s hands down our favorite. Love this one, not too mayonnaisey. Have made it several times and it’s always good! Thank you for sharing!

Not exactly like McDs, but I liked it better.

This is perfect! Instead of milk to thin it out I used 1/2 teaspoon of the caper liquid. Kraft olive oil Mayo worked beautifully. Thank you so much!

This is the second time I’ve made this. First was great, this time awesome IMO. We’re moving so blender was packed but the hand grater was still in the drawer. I also had no dill relish, but I had dill pickles and only a small amount of onion left. I grated the onion I had and the two baby dills. Added to the Mayo, had that, added dried parsley, not fresh…we’re moving…capers. Why I still had capers I don’t know, but mashed them with a fork. Added a bit of pickle juice, the sugar, let it chill for the 2 hours, and OMG! It’s amazing what you can do on a pinch but still follow the spirit of the recipe

I have tried this recipe blended and not blended. While they both taste good, I feel it tastes more spot on to McDonald’s when it is not blended. Also, you must use Kraft Mayo to get the right taste. My one year old eats it in handfuls????

I’ve made this several times now and each time it has turned out very well. I’ve tried bottles of commercial tartar sauce and some of them are just okay and the others not so much. This recipe is really easy and quick and very tasty! I don’t always measure exactly and it doesn’t seem to matter. it still turns out delicious.

Loved this recipe. Didn’t have relish so chopped dill pickles and turned out great. This is a keeper and will be made again. Thanks for sharing.
