“Pretty Much a Piece of Heaven” Black Forest Cake

Although they might not be the green beans that come to mind when thinking of the South, when I lived in Florida, these were a mainstay at southern feasts.

Prep Time: 25 mins
Cook Time: 26 mins
Additional Time: 1 hr 10 mins
Total Time: 2 hrs 1 mins
Servings: 12
Yield: 1 3-layer 9-inch cake

Ingredients

  1. 1 (15.25 ounce) package chocolate cake mix
  2. 1 (3.9 ounce) package instant chocolate pudding mix
  3. 4 eggs
  4. ¾ cup water
  5. ¼ cup vegetable oil
  6. ½ (6 ounce) jar maraschino cherries, quartered, juice drained and reserved
  7. 1 (12 ounce) bag chocolate chips
  8. 1 cup heavy whipping cream
  9. 2 tablespoons white sugar
  10. ½ teaspoon cream of tartar
  11. 1 (12 ounce) can cherry pie filling

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease and flour three 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. Combine chocolate cake mix and instant pudding mix in a large bowl. Add eggs, water, and vegetable oil; mix well to combine. Mix in 1/2 cup maraschino cherry juice until smooth. Stir in cherry pieces and chocolate chips. Divide cake batter between prepared pans, filling each halfway.
  3. Bake cakes in the preheated oven until toothpicks inserted in the centers come out clean, 26 to 32 minutes. Remove from oven and let cool, 10 minutes. Remove from pans and transfer to wire racks to cool completely, about 1 hour.
  4. Beat heavy cream in a chilled glass or metal bowl with an electric mixer on low speed until foamy, about 1 minute. Add sugar and cream of tartar. Increase speed to high and beat until stiff peaks form, 4 to 6 minutes.
  5. Spread 1/4 of the whipped cream evenly over the bottom cake layer. Cover whipped cream with a thin layer of pie filling. Place second layer of cake on top. Spread another 1/4 of the whipped cream over the second layer; cover with pie filling. Place third layer of cake on top. Spread remaining whipped cream on top; cover with remaining pie filling.
  6. Can be served the same day but is best if made the day before and put in the refrigerator overnight.
  7. If the cake seems unstable, steady it by putting a wooden dowel through the center top of the cake if you plan on moving the cake much.
  8. Garnish with chocolate shavings if desired.

Kids loved it. It turned out tasty for sure.

I made this exactly as per the directions and it is beautiful! My only comment is to warn everyone that the cream of tartar will make your whipped cream taste sour, hence the deduction of a star. I thought my cream had gone bad but after tasting the last few drops Omni the carton, it tasted fine. I googled the cream of tartar and read that it will give your whipped cream a sour taste. It’s not bad, just kind of like you used some sour cream or cream cheese. Just FYI.

No changes. Everybody loved it even those who are not crazy about chocolate. Holiday dessert for sure.

I made it for a Christmas present for a neighbour. OMG it was fantastic, now everyone wants one. It was the first time I had made a layer cake. Of course I had to try a difficult one. It’s important to cool the cake and then chill (I left it overnight) before cutting and filling. The cake is rich and moist, real whipped cream makes it . It is time consuming, but worth it. Be prepared and it’ll be Great.

Yep! Pretty much heaven. I made this for work. I needed it to travel well, so I did not put the cherry pie filling in or on it. I took the cherries separately and had people spoon it on to their slices of cake. They liked this because they could put as much or as little as they wanted. I also didn’t want to take the time to pipe the icing on the cake and I don’t like the way whipping cream looks when it is used like a frosting. So I shaved an ounce of semi-sweet chocolate on top of it. It worked out beautifully.

I followed the recipe exactly, except I also doubled the whip cream to cover the cake plus I bought a 500ml container of whipping cream, so I used the whole thing. The cake was really good, a few things I would change if I make it again is omit the chocolate chips. They make the cake “crunchy and I prefer a plain cake. I let the cake sit for about 4 hours and the pieces fell apart next time I would refrigerate over night so it settles really well.

This was really, really good. I made it for my daughter’s 22nd birthday (per her request) and it didn’t disappoint. I doubled the whipped topping “icing” – I actually think you could do even more cause it makes it really feel light and fresh. I would also recommend to get 2 cans of the cherry pie filling. By the time I got to the top of the cake there wasn’t enough of it visually for my liking. Overall a yummy cake that I will certainly make again.

This cake was great. I did make changes that my family loved. I doubled the icing like the other reviewers suggested and added some vanilla to the icing. I used a mix of sour cherries, sweet cherries and maraschino cherries (all canned)in the batter, in between the layers and on top. I used extra cherry juice in the batter and added a few Tb of sour cream. I used the left over Cherry juice and combined with pectin and cherries to make a gel for the middle layers. After adding the cherries on top I melted chocolate and drizzled over the cherry top and down the sides. It was moist, tasty and beautiful.

Double the frosting and use a pastry bag to spread the whip cream on top to make a nice presentation

I made this for my husbands birthday and our guests loved it. They all loved how moist the cake was and asked for additional slices to go. The only thing I did different was doubled the icing to put on the sides of the cake.

this cake is the epitome of Black Forest cake! I’ve made it many times to take to a cookout or holiday dinner & there’s NEVER any leftover. I once made it for a niece’s graduation party (because it’s her favorite)& actually witnessed some obscure relative put several pieces on a plate & put it in her car to take home! It was quite bold! I guess she really liked it, too!
