Over mashed potatoes or rice, this salisbury steak with mushroom sauce is fantastic. A fantastic from-scratch dish that I discovered years ago. Without the mushrooms, the gravy is still delicious. That is how I made it for my hubby.

Ingredients
- 1 pound lean ground beef
- ⅓ cup dry bread crumbs
- ¼ cup chopped onions
- 1 egg, beaten
- 1 teaspoon salt
- ¼ teaspoon ground black pepper
- 2 cups beef broth
- 1 large onion, thinly sliced
- 1 cup sliced mushrooms
- 3 tablespoons cornstarch
- 3 tablespoons water
Instructions
- Combine ground beef, bread crumbs, chopped onion, egg, salt, and black pepper in a large bowl until evenly mixed. Shape beef mixture into 4 patties, about 3/4-inch thick.
- Fry patties in a large skillet over medium heat until browned on both sides, about 10 minutes. Add beef broth, onion, and mushrooms; bring to a boil. Reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer until patties are no longer pink in the center, about 10 minutes more. Transfer patties to a platter and keep warm.
- Bring onion mixture to a boil. Mix cornstarch and water in a small bowl; stir into onion mixture. Cook and stir until onion gravy is thickened, about 1 minute. Pour over patties to serve.

I used recipe as is, except i had brown gravy mix on hand. I did use beef broth instead of water for the gravy, and onions. Fantastic Salisbrury steaks
I loved the aroma of it cooking and was very delicious
Delicious!
Followed the recipe, (though eyed ball the bread crumbs, may have been a little more), adding a little red bell pepper. Delish!
This was simply delicious. I added some fresh sage to the hamburger and sweet bell peppers to the pan. I also substituted Knorr vegetable bullion, as that’s my go-to. We served it over rice. I definitely recommend.
I made this exactly as the recipe called for with the exception of having extra mushrooms in the gravy. It was delicious, and I’ll make again. Thank you!!
Easy and delicious. Frequently, I omit the chopped onions in the HB patties and use onion powder and garlic powder. Our preference. Yum!
Easy to make! My husband loved it! I made it without mushrooms. Added garlic salt for seasoning.
Delicious and easy.
It was great. After frying the beef patties, I sauteed the onion and mushrooms in the drippings first. I used beef stock instead of broth for a richer flavor. I also added 3 cups of stock to make more gravy. This recipe is a keeper.
Easy peasy, however I added Italian seasoning, onion soup mix, and Worcester shire sauce to mixture. Thank you for sharing this recipe.
This is the bomb! Exactly the way i like, no love my Salisbury steak!! Thank you for sharing!
Very good but a little bland. Will try it with Italian crumbs or Lipton soup mix next. I think that would do it. Any combo of your favorite spices! Healthy and hearty!
We loved it! Easy recipe. Very flavorful. I used Italian flavored breadcrumbs. Generous black pepper. I served it with sautéed spinach with olive oil and garlic. I will definitely prepare this meal again. I served it over pot pie style noodles
Cooked it for the guys at the firehouse and everyone loved it!
No leftovers. My guys loved it!
This is a family favorite, even for the one who said they don’t like salisbury steak! I do caramelize the onions and mushrooms and continue doing so in the pan while browning the meat. Delicious!!
Edible, but no flavor whatsoever. It turned out exactly how it looks in the picture, but the actual meat is flavorless. Add a lot more salt and pepper.
It was very good. I will make this again. I didn’t have mushrooms to add to it but it was still good
Was simple and amazing!
Loved it!! Tasted amazing and my entire family ate it like they were starving. Made with mashed potatoes and made extra gravy. Basically doubled the recipe for my house. Amazing!! This is my go to Salisbury steak recipe from now on.
