Apple Dump Cake

  4.5 – 66 reviews  • Dump Cake

A beef-based chili made in a slow cooker. Pour chili into serving bowls, top with Cheddar cheese cubes, and then top with sour cream.

Prep Time: 5 mins
Cook Time: 40 mins
Additional Time: 15 mins
Total Time: 1 hr
Servings: 20
Yield: 1 (9×13-inch) cake

Ingredients

  1. 2 (21 ounce) cans apple pie filling
  2. 1 (15.25 ounce) package yellow cake mix
  3. ½ cup butter, melted

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
  2. Pour pie filling into a 9×13-inch baking dish. Sprinkle cake mix evenly over apple pie filling and top with melted butter.
  3. Bake in the preheated oven until the top starts to turn brown, about 40 minutes. Cool cake 15 minutes before serving.
  4. Any pie filling works great with this recipe.
  5. I’ve found that when serving, it is easier to use a large serving spoon to dollop out a spoonful rather than try and cut it like a cake since pie filling is not a solid base.

Love this recipe, it’s so easy. All I added was ground cinnamon on top of the apples .

Very tasty. Unfortunately my cake had many spots where the dry cake mix was underneath the browned crumble. Had to throw out those parts of the cake, which left me with about half a cake. UPDATE: the cake was complete mush the next day. Had to throw that out also. I’m guessing this has to be eaten the same day. Very disappointing.

Call it cake, call it cobbler, call it a crisp, but just call it good! This may be the single easiest dessert recipe with excellent results that I’ve ever made. I scaled the recipe in half, weighing the Aldi yellow cake mix, so I have half left to make another with maybe cherry flavor. No complaints here, a quick-and-easy dessert that we enjoyed.

I used half the suggested amount of cake mix. I use 3 tablespoons of butter. I melted it in the microwave and then used a spoon to evenly distribute it on top of the cake mix. To add additional fruit, I thinly sliced a cored gala apple and then spread the pieces evenly on the bottom of my pan. I then spooned the canned apples on top of that before adding the cake mix and butter.

Very fast and easy! I used 2 cans of lite apple pie filling to reduce some of the sugar and calories. I took a frozen stick of unsalted butter and used a cheese grater to grate it up and mixed it with the cake mix, then spread that on top of the pie filling in a large glass baking dish. Baked it for 40 minutes then broiled it for a few minutes to get it browner (probably didn’t actually need that step). No dry spots on my cake. Spooned up our servings and topped it with Blue Bunny Sweet Freedom vanilla ice cream (also reduced sugar and actually has some fiber in it!). Very good lower calorie dessert and would like to try with cherry pie filling and chocolate cake mix!

Combine cold butter and cake mix with a pastry blender till it resembles coarse sand. Then sprinkle the mixture over the pie filling and this should avoid the dry patches of cake mix that a few reviewers had issues with.

Very easy to make! Very sweet! I am wondering if anyone has tried making this using 1/2 of a box of cake mix to cut back on the sugar? I do love sweets, but too sweet for me and my guests.

Fantastic recipe, thank you! Baking is hard on my hands and wrists so this was a great recipe for me.

Easy to make and tastes good.

This cake was just way to sweet for me.

Simple recipe! I sprayed the top with a little cooking spray at the end to avoid the dry sections of the cake mix!

Yummy, perfect

It was good but it’s best served immedietly, because it gets soggy after a while.

I used a spice cake mix and this dish was so yummy. I also threw some chopped pecans on top. For the butter, I cut it up into very thin slices and covered the cake mix. This is how I have made other dump cakes. Not sure if it makes a difference as to whether you melt the butter or slice the butter. Either way, this was a great dessert.

This recipe is BEYOND easy and really delicious! I’ve made several varieties: apple with both yellow and spice cake mix, blueberry with both yellow and lemon cake mix (I added lemon zest for a great lemony POP!), cherry with lemon, yellow, and chocolate cake mix (black forest, anyone??)…the variations are ENDLESS!! Even better, this is a great recipe for young bakers to start their baking skills, just because it’s SO EASY!!

The recipe is ridiculously easy and turned out great!

Super yummy and super simple. I baked it for about 45 minutes then broiled it for 2 minutes to brown up the top a bit. Everyone loved it and asked for the recipe!

I made it the same way, except i used Betty Crocker cake mix and i covered the whole top with salted sweet cream butter, and i didn’t melt the butter at all. I also added cinnamon and pecan nuts to the top, i actually let it bake for an hour and then an extra 5 minutes on broil to get the top like more of a crust then cake. Taste just like an Apple Crisp almost. It was delicious with a lil vanilla ice cream on the side. Thank you for a quick and easy recipe. I will definitely make again, next time with peaches.. Hmmm
