This is the closest recipe to my Dad’s that I’ve found. I grew up crabbing off the Maryland shore and then steaming crabs on a wood fire outside with water, vinegar , salt and Old Bay in a huge kettle. We saved a few dozen to use lump back fin meat for our crabcakes. No hot sauce, but everything else was in them plus a bit more old bay. Dad did fry them in a cast iron skillet in a little butter til they had a nice brown tender crisp. A little lemon juice didn’t do any harm either.
This is how other people think we Marylanders make crab cakes! You are missing 3 key ingredients: Old Bay seasoning, mustard and Worcestershire sauce.
These crab cakes were super tasty. We LOVED them. This recipe is now in our kitchen collection permanently.
addes more breadcrumbs/pank
There is no Old Bay in it. Not a trueMaryland crab cake.
The overall recipe is great! I agree that Old Bay makes it Maryland. Also frying them after letting the cakes chill in the fridge for about 30 mins is perfect. If you don’t let them chill, they will rebel and make things difficult. Nobody wants rebellious crab cakes, lol. Overall, the simplicity of not over adding to the crab is perfect! This comes from someone that grew up crabbing on the Chesapeake. Like lobster rolls, let the protein speak louder than the additives! Oh, for those complaining about canned crab, the recipe doesn’t state that and not everyone has access to fresh crabs!
Added cajun Shrimp w/spicy remoulade sauce.
I loved it, a little salty but would make it again. Put it in my airfryer
It’s not bad, but it shouldn’t be considered a Maryland crab cake. Maybe that’s why it’s called Maryland crab cake 2. Crab seasoning is a must. Even with the hot sauce, it’s bland. Also do not shred the meat!BUT it has a great consistency and cooked up well. Remember after forming the cake to put it back in the fridge to set.
I Love crab cakes: and these are delicious! Chicagoland
Simple and delicious. I spiced it up with a dash of cheyenne.
I made 5 patties and gave one to 5 friends. Vote was unanimous: Best they ever ate. Made tarter sauce but made some changes. I used olive oil Mayo and equal amount of mustard Mayo, horseradish, variety of chopped olives, chopped green onion, Cajun seasoning, squeeze of lemon juice. They loved both crab cakes and tarter sauce.
These are so easy to make and super delicious!
Absolutely delicious! Restaurant quality crabcakes.
Very easy recipe to follow and very tasty. I’ll make them again.
I am from Maryland and eat crabs and crab cakes regularly. I loved this recipe because it was easy and without much ‘filler’. I did not use hot sauce. I used old bay seasoning in the recipe and sprinkled on top. I also used gluten free Pankosky instead of bread crumbs and they were delicious!!
Good recipe.. I added old bay, garlic powder, and grainy mustard… even better!!
Crab cakes are one of my favorite foods….this recipe is delicious as I made it exactly as written. I think next time I would use some old bay seasoning to ramp up the flavor a bit more. Squeeze a bit of lemon over top. Very good!
any “marylander” that loves these must be used to eating Phillips crab cakes. Not Jimmy’s, Double T, or Fisherman’s inn.
I loved this recipe and the crab cakes came out perfect, I served them with Tzatziki sauce to keep it low fat. Tasted great!
Very dry recipe with little flavor. Cook time is way too long. I cut it in half and it still was dry and slightly burnt
