Delicious spareribs roasted in the oven with a tasty homemade barbecue sauce.

Ingredients

  1. 4 pounds pork spareribs
  2. 2 cups sliced onions
  3. 2 cups ketchup
  4. 2 cups water
  5. ½ cup white vinegar
  6. ½ cup dark brown sugar
  7. ¼ cup Worcestershire sauce
  8. 4 teaspoons mustard powder
  9. 4 teaspoons salt
  10. 1 tablespoon vegetable oil, or as needed

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Split ribs down the center between the bones.
  2. Mix onions, ketchup, water, vinegar, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, mustard powder, and salt together in a bowl. Set aside 1/2 of the sauce for basting.
  3. Heat oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Working in several batches, add ribs and sear until browned, 4 to 5 minutes per batch.
  4. Transfer ribs to two baking pans and arrange in a single layer. Pour remaining BBQ sauce over ribs.
  5. Bake ribs in the preheated oven, turning and basting with sauce every 20 minutes and adding reserved sauce as needed, until meat easily pulls away from the bone, about 2 hours. An instant-read thermometer inserted into the center should read at least 145 degrees F (63 degrees C).

This was ok, seemed like a lot of work. Mine didn’t turn out like the picture, sauce was runny & I never figured out what to do with all those sliced onions! I too, cut back on the salt, only used 2 tsp. The search continues!

Based on the comments by other reviewers, I used only 1/2 tsp salt, baked for the first 2 hours covered tightly with foil then the final hour uncovered. They turned out perfect for my daughter’s birthday dinner.

Excellent ribs! Better and easier than barbecued! I used half the marinade and covered tightly for two hours, as suggested by other reviewers, then uncovered and basted and turned every twenty minutes with the rest of the marinade. Delicious!

Modifications /extras : Used Keenes as the dry mustard; added 1/4c sriracha; used white wine vinegar; added mushrooms and a couple stalks of celery. Seared ribs, put in all the sauce and veg. and then baked it all at 300 in a Dutch oven.

Unbelievable flavor! I don’t barbecue but don’t need to with this recipe. And so easy. I did the basting and turning because I like the idea of the sauce cooking in over and over for a deeper flavor. It worked!

2700 mg of sodium per serving? 4 tsp of salt in the recipe? That is way beyond healthy or believable. Cut the salt to 1 tsp. at most. You will most likely be better off using a prepared sauce that is lower in sodium. It is a yummy recipe otherwise.

Mom and I enjoyed this rib recipe! It was great. We are a bit snobbish as we are Texan..lol and without firing up the grill this did the job. Tender, moist, and delicious. Great, meal in a time of social distancing and staying at home.

In step 2 add brown sugar. step 4 cover with foil. Turn after 1 hr. After 2 remove foil add sauce every 20 min or so.
