Ingredients

  1. 2 (1/2-inch) slices sourdough or French bread
  2. 1 tablespoon unsalted butter
  3. 1 large egg
  4. 2 slices Canadian bacon
  5. 1/3 cup shredded Swiss cheese
  6. 1 teaspoon honey mustard

Instructions

  1. Cut a 2 1/2-inch hole from the center of one slice of the bread. Melt butter in a medium nonstick skillet over medium-low heat. When it foams, place the cut slice of bread and the round in skillet and toast lightly, about 1 minute.
  2. Crack the egg into the hole and season with salt and pepper, and cook until golden brown, about 2 minutes.
  3. Flip the egg bread, sprinkle half of the cheese on bread and top with ham. Spread mustard on second piece of bread and close sandwich. Cook until well browned and bottom part of cheese begins to melt, about 1 minute more. Flip whole sandwich and cook until all cheese is melted, about 2 to 3 minutes more. Serve.

I LOVE egg in the hole (as we called it when we were kids) but this is even better.  I am in LOVE!  I just LOVE sandwiches.  The only question I have, and maybe I’m reading it wrong, the recipe says to put half of the cheese on after flipping.  It doesn’t say when to use the other half.  Obviously I put as much cheese as I am feeling at the moment but I just wanted to make sure I wasn’t missing anything.

So easy to make! Best part is i usually have all of these things lying around the house. I also put an Italian twist on this and added garlic salt and Italian seasoning to the butter on the bread!

What?!? so fun, delicious, easy, and did I say fun?

I just made this with turkey and shredded italian cheese. It came out great. I’ll try this next time with mayo or chipolte sauce.Great sandwich.

Fun, easy and SUPER DELICIOUS!!! After trying this recipe as specified, I have been changing it up, using different types of cheese and mustard, with consistently great results. My favorite variation is spicy mustard with cheddar cheese, but you can use any cheese or mustard that you — or your family — likes best, and it will be equally delicious. Fast, easy, fun, YUM!!!

Amazingly simple and delicious. I forewent the mustard, and added precooked mushrooms. I’m a college student, so creative ways to make simple meals are always a plus :]

There are two ways I follow recipes: to the letter (going out and buying every ingredient and as guidelines (scavenging around the house. This was the latter. I used what was in stock in my kitchen: whole wheat bread instead of french/sourdough and turkey instead of bacon (and dijon mustard instead of plain mustard, but that’s just a taste thing. It turned out wonderfully. I added more cheese than instructed because I like lots of cheese in my grilled cheese, but other than that even with the substitutes it was a lovely, clever idea. Only two things to watch out for: don’t make the hole in the bread too small! I did and it still turned out well since you flip the bread over, but I could’ve done better. And while the egg’s cooking, don’t burn the bread! Since you’re flipping the bread over anyhow, don’t worry if the egg cooks through. But those are just some newbie mistakes. Easy, filling and tasty recipe.

Awesome for kids and adults. i used low fat bread and reduced fat cheese. Egg in a hole has always been life changing.
