Cook: 5 hr
Yield: 8 servings

Ingredients

  1. 1 3-to-4-pound boneless pork shoulder (or 4 1/2-pound bone-in pork shoulder)
  2. 1 tablespoon kosher salt
  3. 2 teaspoons ground black pepper
  4. 1 onion, roughly chopped
  5. 4 cloves garlic, finely minced or pressed through a garlic press
  6. 1/2 cup dry white wine

Instructions

  1. Rinse the pork, place on a cutting board, pat dry with paper towels and rub in the salt and pepper. Set the pork in the bowl of a slow cooker, scatter the onion over the pork, sprinkle in the garlic and add the wine. Cook until the meat easily pulls apart with a fork, about 5 hours on high or 8 hours on low.
  2. Turn off the slow cooker and transfer the pork to a platter. Use two forks to shred the meat.
  3. If you don’t have a slow cooker, you can braise the pork shoulder in a 325 degrees F oven for 2 1/2 to 3 1/2 hours.

I added a beer instead of wine. (and always a bay leaf)

Hands down a great cut of meat w so many options. I also throw in dried chilies, if I have some. And any other veggies that need to be used up.

Great basic recipe.

So easy and so tasty! I got a late start, so I put it in the slow cooker for 5 hours on high. The pork came out a bit dry, but that is often the case when I use the high setting/time for meat. Next time I will do it “low and slow.” An excellent and versatile recipe!

Excellent!  So easy and very delicious.  I happened to receive a pork shoulder and so I searched for different recipes (as I most likely would never have purchased pork shoulder) and found Melissa’s wonderful.  My only added note is that I place carrots on the bottom (that way the veggie is also already cooked).  I have made it both with bone in/without; I prefer bone-in.  Also, leftovers are as good if not better!

This really is a good all-purpose slow cooker pork recipe! I have used this pork for both Philly-style pork sandwiches and in Cubanos. Works perfect for both.

My ‘go-to’ recipe for a pork shoulder!
Since my family isn’t huge on BBQ, I make this for friend/family & serve w/mashed potatoes & gravy, Any leftovers will have a touch of BBQ sauce added and/or will be turned into Cubano sandwiches – GREAT recipe!

Is there a conversion for time cooked to pounds of meat?
I want to try this recipe, but I have pork shoulder cut into 1 pound chunks; how long would this take if I were only cooking the 1 pound?

This makes a great batch of beautifully cooked pork, now what about some of the varied ways to use it, making meals for two beyond gobs of barbecue sauce and a bun?

OMG! This is an easy flavorful recipe. I have prepared another recipe calling for nectar and a lot of other things you may not have in pantry. This is  a keeper. I cooked in oven my slow cooker was not large enough. I  just adjusted the cooking time.
