Kitty Litter Cake

The ideal pot roast for the fall! When I was a little kid, my mom created this recipe for our family. It was a hit with everyone, and I now make it for my husband, who feels the same way. During the final 30 minutes of cooking, if you like carrots with your pot roast, add them to the pot.

Servings: 20

Ingredients

  1. 1 (15.25 ounce) package German chocolate cake mix
  2. 2 ¼ cups water, divided
  3. 1 cup vegetable oil, divided
  4. 3 large eggs
  5. 1 (15.25 ounce) package white cake mix
  6. 3 large egg whites
  7. 4 cups cold milk
  8. 2 (3.4 ounce) packages instant vanilla pudding mix
  9. 1 (12 ounce) package vanilla sandwich cookies
  10. 3 drops green food coloring
  11. 1 (12 ounce) package chewy chocolate-flavored candy (such as Tootsie Roll®)
  12. 1 kitty litter box and liner
  13. 1 kitty litter scoop

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease the bottoms of two 9×13-inch glass baking dishes.
  2. Make the cakes: Mix chocolate cake mix, 1 1/4 cups water, 1/2 cup vegetable oil, and 3 eggs in a large bowl with an electric mixer on medium speed until well combined. Pour into one of the prepared baking dishes.
  3. Mix white cake mix, 1 cup water, 1/2 cup vegetable oil, and 3 egg whites in another large bowl on medium speed with clean beaters until well combined. Pour into the second prepared baking dish.
  4. Bake cakes in the preheated oven until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean, 30 to 35 minutes for the chocolate cake and 29 to 34 minutes for the white cake. Remove from the oven and let cool to room temperature on a wire rack, about 30 minutes.
  5. While the cakes are baking, make the pudding: Whisk cold milk and pudding mix together in a large bowl for 2 minutes. Refrigerate until needed.
  6. Crumble cookies in small batches in a food processor, scraping down the sides of the bowl often. Place 1/4 cup crumbs into a small bowl; stir in food coloring until crumbs are green. Set remaining crumbs aside.
  7. Unwrap candy rolls. Line the kitty litter box with the liner.
  8. Crumble cooled cakes into a large bowl. Add 1/2 of the uncolored cookie crumbs and some chilled pudding; toss to blend, adding more pudding as needed until mixture is moist but not soggy. Pour mixture into the kitty litter box.
  9. Microwave 1/2 of the candy rolls in a microwave-safe dish until soft, 30 to 60 seconds. Shape the ends so they are no longer blunt, then curve the candies slightly. Bury candies randomly in the litter box and sprinkle with 1/2 of the remaining uncolored cookie crumbs. Sprinkle a few green crumbs over top.
  10. Microwave 3 to 4 candies until almost melted. Place them on top of the cake and sprinkle some green crumbs over top.
  11. Microwave remaining candies until soft, then shape as in Step 9. Arrange all but one candy randomly over the cake, then sprinkle with remaining uncolored crumbs. Hang the remaining candy over one side of the litter box and sprinkle remaining green crumbs over top. Serve cake with the kitty litter scoop.
  12. Nutrition data for this recipe includes the full amount of pudding. The actual amount of pudding consumed will vary.

Made this for my coworkers last year. Had them fooled since I am a Crazy Cat Lady! They wouldn’t eat it until I did. It was terrific! Thanks for the recipe!

Loved it! Turned out great. I would recommend this to make mixing easier: divide each chocolate & white cake into thirds, then crumble into 3 bowls. I have large mixing bowls and struggled to mix everything together into two bowls when adding the pudding. Flavor is good without being too sweet. Instead of buying a litter box for this, I got a disposable aluminum pan 13 x 9 in x 4 inches deep. Litter scooper brings it together, got from the dollar store & washed before placing.

Most people where too grossed out to eat it but the people that did loved it. I used Ghirardelli brownies . I let them cool overnight then scooped some out and shaped them like cat turds. I rolled them in the crushed golden oreos and buried some of them.

This was a hit! I made cakes, grated cookies ahead of time and assembled day of party. Making another for a party tonight! Hint: I assembled, including tootsie, day of party and refrigerated cake until needed. Total refrigerator time about 4 hours. The candy looked wet and lightened in color so for tonight’s cake, I’ll add candy just before needed so color is darker. I used a foil pan and purchased scoop! Worked perfectly. My daughter suggested getting a skeleton cat for next year!!! Wish she suggested it earlier. Would have been the perfect touch!

Omg – Read the review by worldsbestchef. Lol x 10. But, seriously, I can’t wait to make this again for an upcoming party. A tiktok person also used marshmallow fluff dipped in the cake and cookie crumbs for the “urine clumps.” Looked so good.

The only thing I changed is I didn’t use Tootsie rolls. I have a cast iron corn on the cob pan. I make brownies in that and lay around the top of the cake and in the cake.

I actually made this for a Halloween party back in 2015. I added 1/2 tsp almond extract to the yellow/ white boxed cake and 1 tsp vanilla extract to the chocolate boxed cake mix. It made them taste less like box cakes. The cake was a super tremendous hit – everyone wanted to know how I did it! LOL The number one comment “It looks so real!” Followed by “I can’t believe how good this tastes”.

Super delicious! I did not have a new kitty litter box or scoop so I just used and old one from my dead cat. Of course I don’t have him anymore. I wanted to keep him but my vet wouldn’t let me. His name was bubbles. The cat not the vet of course.

We followed the recipe as it is, for our cat lover birthday girl. Little brothers and sisters all helped. Needless to say that we all laughed as we put on the tootsie roll finishing touchers to make our cake look authentic. Cake was fun to assemble and delicious to eat! Thank you for a family project that will always be remembered!

It was a hit! I loved watching people’s reactions. I’ll save the litter box and scoop and make it again. I used moist cake mixes and didn’t need 2 boxes of pudding. 1 box of pudding is enough with moist cake mixes.

food processor is a must! managed to crumble the cookies with my magic bullet!

This was fun to make with my daughter. She had to make something for 3rd grade Halloween party. Her teacher asked for the “grosser the better” desert, and they would judge.. she won for the best gross looking. Not many kids tried it. You will not need two boxes of pudding mix. I wish I would’ve read further on before mixing it in. it ended up a little on the soggy side. I did bake the cakes a day ahead and it made the mixing the cakes easy. I also used crushed gram crackers .. for the topping

I made this for my Halloween dinner last night. I agree that it’s a lot of work… but it’s totally worth it for the reactions alone!

So perfect for a Halloween potluck. It ended up being very realistic and it really tasted good. We increase the recipe by adding an extra white cake and it really helped a lot with the looks of it.

Made this for our office Halloween costume party and it was a hit. I used the store brand cake mixes, white and Dutch chocolate. When I put the crumbled cake in the pan, it was so small that I added a yellow cake mix. The only green food coloring I had was neon green. Here is a picture of the finished product.

Wouldn’t change a thing!

super fun dessert at our Halloween party. Draw back, as good as it is…people have a hard time taking a scoop:)

It didn’t taste as good as I had hoped, but it did look like a dirty cat little box. We bought a new cat little box and scoop to top it off. Very funny reactions
