Ingredients
- One 18.25-ounce box lemon cake mix (recommended: Betty Crocker)
- 1 stick butter, softened
- 1 egg
- 16 ounces cream cheese (recommended: Philadelphia) softened
- 1/3 cup sugar
- One 3-ounce box lemon or lime gelatin (recommended: Jell-O)
- 2 eggs
Instructions
- Set up grill for indirect cooking over medium heat. (No heat source under cookies). Spray 9 by 13-inch foil pan with cooking spray and set aside.
- For lemon layer:
- In a large mixing bowl, beat with an electric mixer on low speed the cake mix, butter, and egg until well combined and smooth. Press cake mixture evenly into prepared pan; set aside.
- For top layer:
- In a medium mixing bowl, beat cream cheese, sugar, and lemon or lime gelatin on medium speed until creamy. Add eggs and beat until smooth.
- Spread cream cheese mixture over cake layer. Place foil pan in a second foil pan for stability and insulation. Place on hot grill away from heat. Cover and bake 40 to 50 minutes. Rotate pan halfway through baking. Remove from grill and cool completely before cutting into squares.
- Indoor:
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
- Spray 9 by 13-inch baking pan lightly with cooking spray; set aside. Prepare cake layers as directed above. Bake for 40 to 45 minutes or until cake barely start to pull away from sides. Cool completely before cutting into squares.

I love this recipe I made them with my daughter and we added lemon zest and lemon juice to both the filling and the cake crust.They we’re delicious and came out great I will definitely make them again. my whole family enjoyed them. I was very disappointed with the results, none of my guest enjoyed this recipe. Cake mixture tasted burned, not enough lemon flavor either. I pulled it out of the oven at 35 minutes, glad I didn’t go 40-45.
I don’t get the part about the grill. What’s it for?

I made this, and it was an instant hit! but i used yellow cake mix, added a thin layer of lemon curd one cooled, then added powdered sugar… Takes them to a whole other level… FABULOUS!!! I have also substituted raspberry jello for the lemon, and topped it off with a thin layer of raspberry preserves and a white chocolate drizzle : to die for!!!
The cream cheese mixture tasted really well, but unfortunately the cake part on the bottom came out a bit burned. I followed the directions exactly and baked it for 40min and not 45.
Super easy and soooo good. It’s quick and a big party pleaser : )
Haven’t made these yet, but what if you put nuts in the cake mixture and blueberries in the creamcheese mixture…blueberries and lemons are great together

My family loves lemon bars, so this was a “must try.” The recipe and end result were exactly as the TV program. No unpleasant surprises. I substituted lower fat cream cheese. What started out as a treat for my family, ended up being a coveted sports prize at an atheletic event. I’ve already bought ingredients to make more. These squares will make a nice addition to a dessert tray and are just right for a tea or coffee.
