Everything was good except for the sweetness level. I cut my mug in half with hot water while adding some rum and it was still overpoweringly sweet and then not spiced enough. Would cut the sugars in this recipe by more than half or more than double the other ingredients to serve more people.
Scaled everything back by half since I was only making 2 servings. Used a Dark Rum instead of a Spiced Rum which amped up the dark sugar notes. Used salted butter for a little added contrast to all of the sweet ingredients. Added a slight bit extra rum and water (about an ounce each) but probably would scale back the sugar and butter slightly next time instead. Very tasty drink, spices on point, rich, gets a bit sweet by the end. Certainly a good base recipe for this classic drink to tailor to your tastes.
The spice mixture was spot-on. Eventhough a little (very little) bit much on the butter, but as someone suggested using a full cup of rum then it should balance out the butter ratio.
I heeded the other reviewers warnings and halved the butter. Absolutely delicious!!
Way too buttery.
Too much butter! It was thick and tasted mostly like butter. If you don’t drink it quickly enough, it thickens and feels like you’re drinking straight butter.
I found the recipe easy to make and delicious as written. I would not change a thing except I added a full cup of rum (I like rum) and therefore the butter did not overpower everything. After all; it is hot buttered rum so try it first as written before you listen to the reviews and start cutting the butter AND the rum amounts. I did pour some hot water in the mugs before serving to warm the mugs up. Very rich and delicious desert drink.
Please, please, please cut the butter in half! Like another reviewer stated it overpowers everything, making it feel like you are literally just drinking butter. Also, up the temperature of the water, or make sure that your rum in room temp before adding it to the mixture, or it will be lukewarm when you serve it. I opted to nuke it in the microwave for a few seconds, which isn’t the best option. I think that 1/2 a cup of rum would also be sufficient.
2 tablespoons of butter per serving is excessive, it tastes like I’m just drinking butter. It greatly overpowers the flavor of the rum (which I even added a double portion). In addition, the knowledge of how exactly unhealthy this is really cuts into the enjoyment. The heat of the boiling water dissipates so quickly that by the time I got the mugs into people’s hands (working quickly to just make this and nothing else) the drink was hardly lukewarm. Not impressed by this Lukewarm Butter Drink (with some rum).
OMG I saw this Beverage on a TV show at it looked so good. But I was not sure how to make it. I had all the ingredients so I made the batter and made myself this rum drink with Captain Morgan’s spiced rum and I have never tasted anything this Fabius before. You are crazy if you do not try this.
