I had some ham I needed to use up, so I “doctored up” Bush Beans using your recipe.
Overkill? Maybe.
Yet everybody LOVED them!

I liked this a lot, and made it as written except I rehydrated and cooked dried beans and used them in place of the canned ones. I think it would be just as good without the ham, so I’ll try that next time for a vegetarian version.
This is what i add to make it work for me
No crushed tomato
Use trinity with tomato
Use 1 cup red lentils to give the thickened sauce
Bundle of thyme
Add chipotle powder
I use dried beans not canned
This is an absolutely terrible recipe. The intense sweetness of molasses simply does not go well with canned tomatoes. I had to laugh at the comment preferably low sodium, as there would be no way to know if low sodium tomatoes was used, as the molasses would mask any hint of salt. If you want to try ham instead of bacon in Boston Baked Beans, then just substitute one for the other following your favorite BBB recipe. Then if you dislike the taste, you’ll know for sure it was the ham. The only thing good about this recipe is that my dog loved it and he will be getting it mixed in his kibble for the next week or so.
My husband and I love these beans! I make them throughout the year for BBQs and family events! Absolutely delicious!
This was so easy and flavorful. It can be a meal all by itself. I made the full recipe so that I could get two meals out of it for my husband and myself but my husband loved it so much he ate every bit of it during one meal. This recipe is a keeper!
These are by far my favorite baked beans!!!! So great to find something sooo delicious without loads of fat and sugar!! And it cooks up quickly!! Thanks Ellie!!
Best baked beans recipe ever! The beans are sweet, but not too sweet. Swapping out lean ham for bacon was a great choice. Thanks Ellie! I don’t even miss the added fat and calories. Perfectly seasoned as well without being too spicy. This will definitely become one of my family’s summertime staples.
PERFECT recipe for healthy baked beans, Ellie! Thank you!!! I like serving baked beans with ribs and corn, but always hated serving those over processed, super salty canned baked beans. NOW, I have a tastier and more wholesome version that I can serve my family and not feel bad about eating, especially after getting off the treadmill : Thanks again, Ellie!
Wow, the best beans and ham! Excellent texture, taste. Made it exactly as recipe states.
Husband wants more!!! And it is so easy, I will gladly oblige him. Thanks for another healthier take on a comfort food, Elle.
