Milky Way Ice Cream

Ingredients

  1. 4 ounces Milky Way candy bars, chopped
  2. 1/2 cup sweetened condensed milk
  3. 1 cup whole milk
  4. 1 cup half-and-half
  5. 1/2 cup chocolate syrup (optional)

Instructions

  1. Melt the candy bars and condensed milk in a heatproof bowl set over a saucepan of simmering water, stirring, until smooth (do not let the bowl touch the water). Remove the bowl from the saucepan and whisk in the milk, half-and-half and chocolate syrup. Refrigerate until cold, at least 2 hours. 
  2. Churn the mixture in an ice cream maker. Transfer to an airtight container and freeze until firm, at least 2 hours. Photograph by Antonis Achilleos

I tried to make this with one small substitution of Milkway bars for eggs. I kept trying to get it to thicken for hours with no success, so I added a touch of flour. Then in a clutzy moment I tripped and bowl fell into the oven for 20 minutes at 400 degrees. Needless to say, tastes nothing like ice cream. 0/5

My fave recipe! If by now, you don’t have one of the newer types of ice cream machines, invest in one. The sides of the bowl are frozen. No ice required! There’s even a handy hole in the top for stirring up bits of candy you use for the better version of this recipe.
It freezes best like this: In microwave: Melt a bag of fresh marshmallows with the majority of the chopped up candy. Stir together. Leave out a few bits and pieces of Milky Way for later!
Add a can of sweetened condescend milk. Add the half-n-half (Or milk. It’s very rich. Milk cuts that down If your ice cream machine container is not full yet, pour milk to “fill line”. Allow the mixture to get cold in the machine. Add the extra cut up pieces of Milky Way. Be warned! The sticky candy might gum up together in one large chunk. I prevent this by sticking a wooden spoon through the hole, while it’s rotating, and stirring well; a much easier task if you have a modern machine. No choco syrup needed!

No problem with freezing. I think I am going to take a page from one of the other reviews and add frozen pieces of candy bar to my next batch. I also am planning on trying this with Snickers because they are my favorite.

I made this recipe for a 4th of July family get together. It was easy to prepare and had a wonderful flavor. My only problem was it did not freeze in my ice cream freezer. I have the ice cream freezer attachment for the KitchenAid Stand Mixer and have used it for years, made lots of different ice creams, which all came out great. I had the Milky Way mixture in the machine for almost an hour and the consistency never changed, so I just poured it into a container and put it in the freezer over night. It had the consistency of an ice milk, not an ice cream. Of course there were no eggs and not alot of milk/cream to make it creamy. I would definitely try it again as I said, the flavor was terrific!

Made this for a picnic tomorrow. It tastes fabulous! The hardest part was melting the candy and the sweetened condensed milk in my make-shift double boiler. I always seem to develop a vaccum problem, where the top and bottom pieces of the pot get sucked together. The base tasted extremely sweet, so I added a pinch of salt before freezing. I bought some extra candy and chopped up about 1.5 oz of it into small bits, froze them on a small cookie sheets and then added them to the ice cream a minute or two before taking it out of the ice cream maker. I’ll bet you could use almost any chocolate candy for this.
