Spiced Thai Iced Tea

  4.5 – 4 reviews  • Thai

similar to the red rooibos or orange black tea-based Thai iced tea offered at Thai restaurants. Use fresh mint leaves as a garnish.

Prep Time: 5 mins
Cook Time: 5 mins
Additional Time: 2 hrs
Total Time: 2 hrs 10 mins
Servings: 4
Yield: 4 glasses

Ingredients

  1. 5 cups water
  2. ¼ cup white sugar
  3. 5 pods star anise
  4. 1 cinnamon stick
  5. 4 pods cardamom, crushed
  6. 8 red rooibos tea bags
  7. ¾ cup sweetened condensed milk
  8. ice

Instructions

  1. Place water, sugar, star anise, cinnamon stick, and cardamom in a saucepan; bring to a boil. Remove from heat and add tea bags. Let tea steep and cool to room temperature, about 1 hour.
  2. Remove tea bags and strain out whole spices; discard. Whisk in condensed milk. Pour into a large pitcher and refrigerate until flavors combine, at least 1 hour.
  3. Fill 4 glasses with ice. Serve tea over ice.
  4. Substitute orange-flavored black tea for the red rooibos if preferred.
  5. If using loose tea, use 1/2 cup tea leaves instead of 8 to 10 tea bags. In step 2, strain through a coffee filter or cheesecloth set in a fine-mesh sieve.

Delicious! I put in a little extra sugar and added 1 tsp. of vanilla extract at the end in my pitcher of tea. I also used a little sweetened condensed milk and half&half. This IS the definitive thai iced tea recipe I will be using this a lot!

This was a good iced tea. I like the Thai spices but just not in a tea form. I was a little skeptical about the sweetened condensed milk being too sweet but I was surprised how mellow the sweetness was.

Delicious! I used orange-flavored black tea, as suggested by the recipe creator, and it was great! This reminded me a lot of iced chai tea, which is one of my faves. This is a definite keeper~YUM, YUM, YUM!!!!!!!!! Thanks for sharing. 🙂
