a fantastic method for utilizing the entire Thanksgiving turkey. You can use stock right immediately or freeze it for later use.

Prep Time: 30 mins
Cook Time: 7 hrs 15 mins
Total Time: 7 hrs 45 mins
Servings: 10
Yield: 10 servings

Ingredients

  1. ⅓ cup all-purpose flour
  2. ½ teaspoon garlic salt
  3. ½ teaspoon ground black pepper
  4. 2 pounds beef for stew, cut into 1-inch cubes
  5. 2 tablespoons olive oil
  6. 1 onion, chopped
  7. 1 ½ cups beef broth
  8. ½ cup red wine
  9. 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  10. 3 potatoes, diced
  11. 4 carrots, sliced
  12. 1 stalk celery, chopped
  13. 2 cloves garlic, minced
  14. 2 bay leaves
  15. 1 (1.5 ounce) package beef stew seasoning mix (such as McCormick®)
  16. 1 teaspoon paprika

Instructions

  1. Whisk flour, garlic salt, and black pepper together in a small bowl; pour into a large resealable plastic bag. Place stew beef in bag, seal the bag, and shake to coat beef to coat completely.
  2. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat; saute coated beef in hot oil until browned on all sides, about 10 minutes. Stir onion into beef; saute until onion is softened, 5 to 7 minutes. Pour beef and onions into a slow cooker.
  3. Stir beef broth, red wine, and Worcestershire sauce together in a bowl. Pour broth mixture into the same skillet and bring to a boil while scraping the browned bits of food off of the bottom of the skillet with a wooden spoon. Transfer broth mixture to the slow cooker.
  4. Mix potatoes, carrots, celery, garlic, bay leaves, beef stew seasoning mix, and paprika into beef mixture.
  5. Cook on High for 1 hour. Reduce heat to Low and cook until meat is tender, 6 to 7 hours.

A whole slow cooker’s worth was gone in one day and that was just three people eating. Oh my gosh, it was so good !!!!

I substituted 1/2 tsp salt & 1/8 tsp ground pepper for 1.5 oz pkg beef stew seasoning mix

The directions should add to the second step not to wash the pan and set it aside. When I arrived at the third step to my dismay, I noted that I needed to add the beef broth, red wine and Worcestershire mixture to a pan that I had already washed. I suspect it’s me have a significant effect on the final outcome of this beef stew.

My husband and children loved it, although they did comment about the saltiness. I used 3 pounds of chuck, added more of the spices listed, eliminated the salt and substituted garlic powder for the garlic salt. Will definitely make it again.

I was hoping to make a better stew after last week’s turned out bland and this wound up being exactly what I needed. I made as directed and it was exploding with flavor. In the future I may experiment with toning down some of the spices, possibly by using a low sodium broth or using half the spice packet, but that is just to suit my personal taste. Overall this stew was fantastic. lol @ dskerr rating 1 star after using bad ingredients

A bit more work than just throwing everything into the crock pot, but well worth it in the end.

absolutely the best beef stew ever.

Major awesome!! My husband said it is by far the best beef stew ever. I followed the recipe exactly but cooked in in the crock-pot. Amazing flavor. Just right thickness. Only problem was I should have doubled it as it disappeared way too quickly.Tasted even better day two with the little left.

Great stew! I’ve made it 3 times now and my family always looks forward to it! I double everything and add mushrooms. I don’t brown the meat first and leave out the wine as I typically don’t have any.

Smelled wonderful while cooking – looked good too. Neither hubby nor I could eat – think it was the 2 bay leaves or maybe the stores generic beef stew seasoning, not sure which. Will try again though and leave out the bay leaves and use McCormicks seasoning.

I added a 1/4 tsp of whole black peppercorns and some green beans and only used one bay leaf. Any of the flour mixture that was left over in the bag got poured into slow cooker. Really really excellent beef stew, full of flavor but not overpowered with spices. Will make again!

Love it! Definitely the best beef stew I’ve ever made. I didn’t make any changes except using baby carrots because I was crunched for time. The meat fell apart when eating like a good beef stew should. The flavor is rich and delightful. Served with crusty bread. Delicious 🙂

My family ?? really enjoyed this! Best of all my 12 year old loved it!! He even eats the veggies!! Fiona ??

I thought this was very tasty and, like any slow cooker beef recipe, fork-tender. I will make it again, but I will decrease the pepper to 1/4 tsp as the 1/2 tsp was just a bit too peppery for me. I will also use whole baby carrots and maybe add frozen peas. It needed a green vegetable. Very good though.

Very good. Delicious. I pretty much went by the recipe. I added one onion to the beef mixture and another one when I put everything in. A bit more garlic for my taste
