Ingredients
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 12 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
- 2/3 cup granulated sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
- Assorted jams (orange, raspberry, grape and/or strawberry), for filling
- Confectioners’ sugar, for dusting (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Line 2 baking sheets with parchment paper. Whisk the flour, baking powder and salt in a bowl. Beat the butter, granulated sugar and vanilla in a large bowl with a mixer until light and fluffy. Add half of the dry ingredients and mix until just combined, then mix in the remaining dry ingredients. Knead a few times by hand to bring the dough together.
- Roll teaspoonfuls of dough into balls and place about 1/2 inch apart on the prepared baking sheets. Make an indentation in the center of each ball with a small measuring spoon or the back of a pen. Fill each indentation with jam (a scant 1/8 teaspoon).
- Bake until the edges of the cookies are golden, 15 to 20 minutes. Let cool 2 minutes on the baking sheets, then transfer to a rack to cool completely. Dust with confectioners’ sugar, if desired. Store in an airtight container up to 1 week.

I had the same issue other bakers had with the dough being crumbly and read the recipe 4x’s just to make sure it wasn’t missing a binding ingredient. Solution: Add 1 large egg and mix until the dough comes together and cleans the mixing bowl. Use a mini cookie scooper to portion the cookies, bake for 15 minutes and the cookies are very tasty. The recipe yielded 63 cookies.
Terrible. I make lot’s of different cookies and wanted to try a new recipe. I wish I had read the reviews before I attempted this one. I wasted all of the ingredients just to have crumbles. Do not waste your ingredients!!!!
Very simple and delicious recipe. I tweeked it and used splenda with sugar free jam for my diabetic dad. I also made a batch with regular sugar. Both tasted very good, my family is hooked on thumbprints.
These cookies were so easy to make! They melt in your mouth and are a family and friends favorite. The most requested cookie I am asked to bake! My favorite jam in the cookie is apricot. Enjoy!
These were delicious but rich, I made them small and used lingonberry preserves so they were a buttery sweet morsel. My son loved them so much he hid the can they were stored in so he could have them all to himself. They looked elegant and were simple to make.
I didn’t have any problem with these cookies. I thought they were simple and delicious. When measuring flour it’s important to pour into the measuring cup and then smooth and level off instead of scooping. Other people’s dough may be on the dry side because they are putting too much flour in by mistake.
I wish I had read the reviews prior to making these cookies. The recipe is missing something. Very frustrating.
I found these cookies very easy to make. Some of the reviewers commented on the dough not coming together, but I had no trouble. I didn’t need to work the dough by hand or add extra ingredients for it all to come together. I did adjust the cooking time for softer cookies (12 minutes. I experimented with fig presereves, but I was not pleased with the results. However, my bumbleberry jam was delicious! Super easy, teeny, yummy treats!
Do NOT make these! This recipie is missing eggs, and something else, but I am not sure what. I am an avid baker and I know I followed the directions properly. I through away the dough…very dry and crumbly. There is another recipie for thumbprints from Food Network Kitchens that is delicious. Use that one instead! :
This was by far the worst cookie recipe I’ve ever used. It says to knead the dough to bring it together…it was just a mess. Almost all powder. I added an egg in the hopes of “bringing it together,” and with about ten minutes of kneading, the “dough” was barely holding together. As I was trying to ball the dough for the cookies, it was drying out and crumbling. I managed to get a sheet in the oven and the finished product tasted awful. Never using this again, and I’d never recommend this to anyone. It only gets one star because it won’t allow zero!
