Ingredients
- 2 tablespoons canola oil
- 1 Spanish onion, chopped
- 3 cloves garlic, chopped
- 1 cup ketchup
- 2 tablespoons ancho chile powder
- 1 tablespoon paprika
- 1 heaping tablespoon dijon mustard
- 1 tablespoon red wine vinegar
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 chipotle chile in adobo, chopped
- 2 tablespoons dark brown sugar
- 1 tablespoon honey
- 1 tablespoon molasses
- Kosher salt and freshly ground pepper
Instructions
- Turkey
- Ground turkey tastes great in this combo-just make sure to use a mix of white and dark meat (90 percent lean) and cook for 5 minutes per side.
- Bacon
- This serious burger comes with two strips of bacon. Bobby likes them crisp.
- Onion Rings
- To make shoestring rings, heat 1 quart peanut oil to 360 degrees in a deep, heavy pot. Dredge thin Vidalia onion rings in flour seasoned with salt, pepper and cayenne; dip in buttermilk seasoned with salt and pepper, then dredge in more flour. Fry until golden brown, turning once or twice, about 4 minutes. Drain on paper towels; season with salt.
- Cheddar
- This extra-smoky burger calls for two thick slices of smoked sharp cheddar cheese.
- Bobby’s BBQ Sauce
- Heat the oil over medium-high heat in a heavy-bottomed saucepan. Add the onion; cook until soft, 3 to 4 minutes. Add the garlic and cook for 1 minute. Add the ketchup and 1/3 cup water, bring to a boil and simmer for 5 minutes. Add the remaining ingredients (except salt and pepper); simmer for 10 minutes, or until thickened, stirring occasionally.
- Transfer the mixture to a food processor; puree until smooth. Season with salt and pepper. Pour into a bowl; cool to room temperature. Spoon on burgers.
- Makes: 1 cup

Used beef and it was lovely.
Where’s the turkey measurement or mention?
My familly loved this burger!
This recipe was so simple to follow and the burger has memorable flavor! OVERALL AMAZING!!!!
Absolutely amazing recipe! Instead of the turkey I used the beef. All of the ingredients married so perfectly together. Ihave to say it was the best burger I’ve ever had. It was perfect.
My husband and I made these for the first time and it was fantastic! We used regular beef as my husband is not a large lover of turkey, but all of these ingredients went so wonderfully together, especially the onion rings, which my husband proclaimed were the best he had ever had. Great recipe which can work with either beef or turkey.
this was such a labor of love… it took some work but my son ,who doesn’t eat onions, was eating the onion rings as fast as I could take them out.. score one for Mom.. then when they saw the finished burger they took a picture of it, score two for Mom, then when they ate it….I was asked to make it “Tomorrow too”. Score three for Mom…. Amazing burger…I quadrupled the sauce and froze it..gave it to some friends at their BBQ… It is a little work…have some help.. make the sauce ahead….. They asked for it for the 4th….Great recipe Bobby…. …yum 🙂 It’s a favorite.
My husband and I loved this burger it was absolutely awsome. My husband loves his beef, but he relly did enjoy this burger. Great job Bobby, thanks.
The preparation is fairly labour intensive (and there will be lots to clean up) but the burger is outstanding once complete! I recommend a cooking partner to get the bacon and the onion rings done while the burgers are grilling. The sauce can be made way ahead of time and used on all sorts of things. I can’t wait to make these again!
This was probably one of the best burgers I ‘ve eaten in my life. But then again this is Bobby’s burger, so you know what to expect, perfection. Right now I’m watching him rate Das on The Next Food Network Star.
