Yield: 18 cupcakes

Ingredients

  1. One 15.25-ounce box yellow cake mix
  2. 3 large eggs
  3. 1 cup water
  4. 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  5. 1 tablespoon sweet marsala wine
  6. Two 6-ounce containers mascarpone cheese
  7. One 8-ounce block cream cheese, at room temperature
  8. 1 1/2 tablespoons instant espresso powder
  9. 1/2 cup powdered sugar
  10. Pinch kosher salt
  11. Unsweetened cocoa powder, for dusting

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F. Line 18 muffin cups with cupcake liners.
  2. For the cupcakes: Combine the cake mix, eggs, water, oil and marsala in a large bowl. Using a hand held mixer, beat on medium speed until combined, about 2 minutes. Fill each muffin cup 3/4 of the way to the top (about 3 tablespoons). Bake until golden brown and a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean, 15 to 20 minutes. Remove to a wire rack to cool.
  3. For the frosting: While the cupcakes are cooling, combine the mascarpone, cream cheese, espresso powder, sugar and salt in a medium bowl. Using a handheld mixer, beat on medium speed until light and fluffy, about 1 minute. Divide the frosting evenly on the cupcakes and spread over the tops. Dust with cocoa powder and serve. Store in the refrigerator.

This is delicious! I added in some coffee flavored toffee as a topping and it made it even better!

I love this frosting. I generally is a big fan of coffee-flavored desserts. 🙂 It’s very creamy and I love that it doesn’t have too much added sugar. I think the cupcake cake could take some coffee soak to make it more tiramisu-like though.

Hi Giada! I’ve been a fan for years. I made these cupcakes with one little change. Instead of a half cup of powdered sugar, I used a whole cup. They were fantastic! I was surprised at how much they tasted like classic tiramisu. Thank you.
