Ingredients

  1. ½ pound ground beef
  2. ½ (28 ounce) jar spaghetti sauce
  3. 1 (14.5 ounce) can diced tomatoes
  4. ½ onion, chopped
  5. 1 clove garlic, minced
  6. 2 teaspoons dried basil (Optional)
  7. 2 teaspoons dried oregano (Optional)
  8. 1 teaspoon salt
  9. 1 teaspoon black pepper
  10. 2 cups dried mafalda noodles
  11. 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese

Instructions

  1. Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Cook and stir beef in the hot skillet until browned and crumbly, 5 to 7 minutes. Drain and discard grease. Add spaghetti sauce, tomatoes, onion, garlic, basil, oregano, salt, and pepper. Cook over low heat until sauce is hot, about 15 minutes.
  2. Meanwhile, fill a large pot with lightly salted water and bring to a rolling boil. Cook mafalda noodles at a boil until tender yet firm to the bite, about 8 minutes. Drain.
  3. Add cooked and drained noodles to the sauce and stir until completely coated. Sprinkle mozzarella cheese on top.
  4. Set an oven rack about 6 inches from the heat source and preheat the oven’s broiler.
  5. Place skillet under the hot broil and cook until cheese is golden and bubbly, 3 to 5 minutes.
  6. You can use ground turkey in place of beef, if you like.

I went through the trouble of ordering mafalda noodles online just for this recipe, to realize that the mafalda noodles weren’t that different in shape from egg noodles, especially the wide kind! And the latter would’ve cost me a fraction of what I paid for the mafalda! Nevertheless, we liked this pasta dish and would make again. I followed the recipe closely, except by using fresh chopped tomatoes for the canned, diced ones. Also to make 4 servings out of this recipe, I use 3 cups of pasta and there is plenty of sauce for that amount of pasta. I made again and added dollops of Ricotta cheese on top to get the dish closer to the traditional lasagna.

I make a version of this using bow tie pasta (farfalle), penne or even elbow pasta. Always great. And the sauce is always a good base sauce for other pasta / Italian style dishes.

Made this as is and it is fantastic. However, I crumbled about 5 lasagna noodles to make up for the mafalda which I could not find. It was perfect and seriously it really makes for about 6 servings. 3 is a little too much for each person.

Very yummy! I followed the recipe exactly as written except that I couldn’t find the mafalda noodles so I used cavatappi instead. I also added some spoonful dollops of ricotta cheese on top before I sprinkled the mozzarella cheese on and then broiled per the recipe. I think the ricotta was a great addition to make the dish more reminiscent of lasagna. I will definitely be making this again!

I followed the recipe exactly as written except for the noodles. Like a previous reviewer, I used regular lasagna noodles and broke them into 2 inch pieces. This is a very easy, and quick dinner!

I replaced the meat with chick beans and the noodles with hulled barley ….. best bean dish ever cooked it all in a smart pot in bone broth and spiced it up messing around worked this time

I used turkey in place of beef as I no longer am allowed to eat any beef, pork–no red meat at all. I did everything else the same but without salt/pepper. Rarely use either of them. I loved it. Actually turned on my oven (a VERY rare thing as I am alone now.) Tasted great.

This is really good and it works exactly as written. If you don’t have mafalde pasta, use lasagna sheets broken into pieces.
