Ingredients
- 4 ripe avocados
- 3 limes, juiced
- 1/2 red onion, chopped
- 1 garlic clove, minced
- 2 serrano chiles, sliced thinly
- 1 big handful fresh cilantro, finely chopped
- Extra-virgin olive oil
- Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper
Instructions
- Halve and pit the avocados. Scoop out the flesh with a tablespoon into a mixing bowl. Mash the avocados with a fork, leaving them somewhat chunky. Add the remaining ingredients, and fold everything together to gently mix. Lay a piece of plastic wrap right on the surface of the guacamole so it doesn’t brown and refrigerate 1 hour before serving.

I don’t blame those folks who weren’t happy with this guacamole. The recipe is at fault here as the size of the ingredients is crucial. From avocados to limes, each item can make or break this recipe depending on size and yield. Four large limes would overpower, yet four small (walnut sized) limes would not be. Also some limes yield more juice than others, yet another consideration. I would have preferred to see, “1/4 cup of lime juice” with a suggestion on how many that might be as well as the amount of salt. “To taste” isn’t an easy direction for people who have never made this before.
Limes today were 90 cents each and avocados were 2.50 a piece in NC. Not an inexpensive experiment for many folks. For a show called, “How to Boil Water,” you would think Tyler would have been be a bit more specific.

Oh wow this was good good!!! Nice and spicy
Juat Made this for tonights All Star Chopped All-Stars Finale. Can’t wait. This receipe is the best so far that I have made. Thank’s Tyler.
I love this recipe! Best guac I’ve ever had.
This was easy and we liked it. The only thing is that I think there was too much lime juice.
I have been using this recipe for about 4 or 5 years since I first saw it on one of his shows. I put chopped tomato in it as he instructed in the show–it makes a big difference in the flavor. It is always a big hit at parties and everyone asks me for the recipe. Thanks Tyler for the many tasty batches of guac!!
This is a simple, yet totally satisfying, guacamole recipe. It is my favorite of all guacamole recipes I’ve tried. I especially love the kick of lime and fragrant cilantro. All of Tyler’s proportions are spot-on for a great guacamole.
I also like to add one chopped tomato, which I fold in towards the end of the steps.
This is IT! The spice is just right and this is absolutely the best one ever. It is killer. Don’t be shy on the serranos. The lime knocks the heat down but you get the flavor.
Tyler’s guac recipe set the standard. It is the only one I use ever use now & not only does everyone rave whenever I serve it, it’s the first thing that’s finished off! Thank you Tyler!
