I used fresh potatoes that I shredded, since I didn’t have any frozen. This made the texture of the potatoes a little weird because they were shredded to thin. My husband loved it but the rest of the family wasn’t impressed. I will try again with frozen potatoes. Overall it is an easy dinner and something different during a busy week.
I really enjoyed this. I subbed smoked turkey sausage, light sour cream, and omitted the butter. Saved a bunch of calories and it was still delicious! I used thawed frozen hashbrowns and it worked just fine. Will make again.
My husband and I are really happy with this dish. It is very tasty and easy to make. This is a go to recipe especially if you want a quick good meal that doesn’t take much to prepare it.
very tasty
I made this exactly as written. It was delicious. Good, uncomplicated comfort food at its best. I served it with steamed broccoli just to add some green.! I will make this again and again. Thanks for the recipe.
This is a great basic recipe that can be altered 16 ways to Sunday if you’re not afraid of that. I don’t think I have ever made a recipe the same way but there are so many good ideas from cooks here that like to explore options. I’m making this with some leftover packets of Horsey Sauce from Arby’s. Just tell me that a little horseradish sauce added don’t sound good with smoked sausage and, yes, I’m going with hash browns and cream of celery soup. Love, love, love good cooks that can wing it!
Both my husband and I really liked this recipe! I used turkey smoke sausage and Garlic & Herb hashbrowns. It was very good served with garlic bread.
Only change I made was shred my own potatoes and used Kroger brand sour cream with chives. Fantastic meal—my husband wants it again!
Very good. I add a can of cream of chicken or cream of celery.
Much too salty!
I used some of the ideas from other reviewers. I used potatoes O’Brien and added a can of Campbell’s cheddar soup. After cooking for a half hour I sprinkled more cheddar cheese on top and baked for 15 more minutes.
This was delicious and easy! I was on a mission to use food I already had on hand and this worked great! Others had suggested sour cream or soups which would definitely work. I had a full package of frozen breakfast potatoes, 1/2 cup of sour cream, 1/2 block of cream cheese, 1/2 stick of butter, 1 half onion, and full Hillshire sausage. I added in a dash of hot mustard, a few drops of Frank’s got sauce, onion salt, and a dash of worcestershire. You could easily add more veggies to this to make it more healthy.
Husband loved it! I added cream of celery soup, some extra sausage, a stalk of celery and some fresh chopped mushrooms since I had them….very tasty, fresh celery added a nice crunch
Excellent recipe. Appeals to most members of the family. It has become a go to for an easy comfort food dish.
I used tater tots super easy will make it again.
Simple! Loved it!!!
I made it with frozen potatoes o’brien instead of hashbrowns, instead of pepper I used original Mrs dash.
Yummy!
My family just loved this. Great for week day dinner and can add pretty much anything to it. Thanks for sharing. Def become a regular!!
Tried substituting with frozen hashbrowns–bad idea! Also, the sour cream was a bad idea. If I made it again, I might add a cream soup, and I would definitely add salt and garlic powder.
My entire family loved this meal! I added cream of mushroom soup and it tasted amazing !
